READY FOR THE BIG CUBAN STAKES Plenty of Eligibles for National Handicap and Derby, to Be Run in March. HAVANA. Cuba. January 3d. Five of the st:,ke fixtures of the Cuban winter racing seasea at Oriental Park have been run. leaving eight more fixtures to be decided. The remaining ones are all important events, notably the Grand National Han dieap and tin- Cuban Derby, both with an endowment of SI O.000. and therefore the most valuable stake offerings of any winter racing season. Mack interest is being shown la the probable fields that will contest for these iin|Kirtant events. The fact that among the eligibles in both stakes are representatives of Cuban owned itaMsi gives those s|:1l cs an added importance and interest. The Grand National and the Derby are both at one mile and nn eighth. The handicap will have its running March 14. while the Derby will be decided March 38, the closing day of the meeting Dcclara tions from bath events were due Januaiy IS, and the list of declarations in both races were smaller than expected. Twenty-nine of the pick of the all-aged division remain in the Grand National, while an even twenty are left in the Derby. Tin- most formidable nominees remaining in the Grand National are Cromwell. Kiku. Hank ODay, Bally, Mite, Walnut Hall, Lackawanna, Orestes. Grundy, Unhbak ami Bafard. If those remaining eligible for the Derby four are the property of Be nor A. H. Diaz, these being Mine Wrack, Grayasiaa, Sea Mat ami BiTcnoca. This well-known Cuban stable appears to hold a strong hand in the decision Of this rich stake. The Armenia Stable, anoiher Cuban racing establishment, has only Fold and Mess Kit to represent it, and this pair are not regarded as having much of a chance. Of the American owned stables W. Y. Thraves. J. T. Ireland. Frank Lector. W. C. Weant and J. W. Mangle have eligibles whose prospect! ■*■ regarded with some favor. Mr. Thraves has the fast filly Mile. Dazie. which has been racing well in sprint handicaps, and which appears able to negotiate a long distance of ground. Mr. Ireland has the sptedy Clearing Ip. : winner in her first time at the barrier. Pangle has Uoseland. a big. lusty gelding, that has been working well, but which has not yet started here.
