I BOLSTER WINS A BIG RACE Carries Top Weight and Captures the Martin Behrman Handicap. * ■ M Damask Runs a Fast Mile and Defeats Slippery Elm — Another Purse for Whitney. ■ ♦ i NEW ORLEANS. La., February 7.— There xrn« quite a horse race out at the Fair Brounds this afternoon; several of them, in fact, but the maim I that drew all sporting New Orleans to the track and crowded to its capacity was the riinnnig of the Martin Behrman Handicap at two miles. External features were admirable, the track being fast and the temperature delightfully pleasant. The big race was the fourth on the card, and no matter what exports thought the general public pinned its faith to Bolster and supported him loyally, despite his ua. pounds. Waahnjrartha Last also came in for heavy support and went to the post at eipial odds with Holster. War Club look up the running soon after the start and showed the way foi nearly a mile and a half, then dropped back into obscurity. Soon after his collapse Bolster moved up into i he lead, and under OBriens capable guidance kop; it gamely and won easily in a new-track record lime for the distance, but showed symptom* of lameness when returning to the judges stand. The lightly weighted Ilenty stayed the route well and finished a good second, with Oninnil a close up third. Wadawortb* Iist ran a good mile and throe-i|uarters. but finished a tired fourth I. was a fine race and heartily enjoyed by the spectators. II. P. Whitneys speedy colt Damask gave a bread him as to the character of his pretensions to being 1 he winner of the Derby at Jefferson 1ark March 17 when he simply ran away from such a fast horse as Slippery Flm in the fifth race, and running its mile in 1:3s1., won by six lengths. lhis is probably the best colt All Gold has sent to the rare*. Slippery Kha raced gamely and csily outstayed W. W. Hastings for second place. The Whitney filly Champagne placed the race for two-year-olds to the credit of her stable, hut had great trouble ahead doing it. She was away badly and had t* make up much ground, but did m it with unflinching gameness, and finally heat Aunt I»i da by a neck, with Lach I. even only a half length away. Geaeral Gleaa brought sore disappointment to those who had backed Broad Man down to 1 to 10 for the Seconal race, a mile dash for three-year-olds. when he came home a half length in front of the favorite. Arrowhead ran well in finishing third, but Hone Dry furnished another disappointment by running unplaced. TACOLA SHOWS GOOD FORM. Taenia came out in good form after being absent from racing for some time and in a fast run three-quarters had the liest of Ceorge Starr by a half length at the end of the third race, with the latter finishing as far in front of Mahony. Charlie I.eydecker was unplaced here and ran below his recent good form, but had some difficulties early in the race. The following onirics were made today to the Mardi Graa Handicap. Early Wright came here today from Tijuana to do some missionary work in the interest of the Lower California track to secure stake entries and additional borne ■ . Mayor Martin Behrman. for whom the .S.VIMMt handicap run today was named, witnessed the race from the stewards stand and presented owner Ferman with a handsome silver cup. Panama returned the cup to Mayor Ilhrmaii to retain as a memeato.
