Sk I •— 1 NEW ORLEANS. La.. February 29.— Mud racing will be in order at Jefferson Park the first part if this week, due to a heavy rain which lasted throughout Saturday sight. The downpour was followed by a drop in temperature, which make- this section today remind one of anything but the to-called "snnay - mth," and as a result there was little activity at either the Shrewsbury coarse or the Fair Rrounds thi- morning. Whil- the raeiag at Jefferson Park lias been of a higher class than ever before during tin- past ten days, willi more good horses seen ill action, the failure of the favorites has bronchi woe to lite form backers, a- only twenty -three choices have won in seventy races 10 date. Last week eleven of the most favored horses were letiirnd winners in forty-two races, sad the only three that were at Ies- than evens were defeated. This made a total of six odd-on choices beaten at the meeilac. while three w,n. The victorious trio seared on the open -inn day. Since that time it has heen rough sleil- iiii; for tin- real short -priced oaea. Luck has In en responsible for the overthrow of many of the favorites, as they have been finishing close up as a rule and quite a few of them were beaten by narrow margin-. OTTieT ho - - which were installed choices on the strenstfa of their Pair Grounds races, apparently did not take as kindly to .1, nelson Park as they did the other track and ran below the form that the: displayed there. Ilie Jefferson Park management has distributed 948,109 in purse money in ten days and it has been shared by one hundred and twenty owner-. The contest for the leadership of the wiaaiag owners is more exciting than at any lime this winter, hut s. A. Clopton. who has this honor at both of tiie previous meetings here, i- still in front. His horses have started only a few times and tiny have won but two races. To date they have earned ,195 in purse money lor htm, while C. T. Worthinctou is next in order with Si .1 14 to his credit. R. B. Wat-kins is the only other owner above the ,900 mark, ho exceeding it by S",.", Jockey Lawrence l.yke has again come into lii-OWU ami is leader of the riders, he having piloted seven winners. A. Rhhcreek is next to him. with one victory lis-, while J. EoeHer has won five race-. The banishmenl of jockey Prank Coltiletti for the remainder of the meeting has had a tendency to make the race for ridfcsg honors more stirring. He had five wins to hi- credit when he was set down. Fifty f.ve jockeys have accepted mounts at Jefferson Park at the present meeting. Continued advice- from the north and east to the effect that the weather in those sections i- still too severe for the training of race horses has caused a number of owners who planned early shipment to delay their departures, and most of them will remain until the end of the Jefferson Park meeting at least. Quite a few others will stay here for -everal additional weeks, especially those who intern! raeiag in Kentucky, as they do not want to take chances en raaahsg into really cold weather I here with their hor-cs immediately aaoa hmviag this warm climate.
