LEGION MAN ON FOOLISH LEGISLATION I NEW ORLEANS La March 10 Sam H Mr Mcokin commander of Jefferson Post of the Ameri ran Legion Louisville Ky is in New Orleans Jefferson Post is one of the largest in the country and has cleared Louisville of radical activities through bringing offenders before the bar of justice When questioned concerning the attitude of his post toward horse racing Mr McMeekin said saidOur Our post has not taken up tin racing question and will not We believe that the objects of the American Legion as set down in the preamble to the constitution deline the scope of our activities We confine our work to the promotion of Americanism seeing that those plotting against American institu ¬ tions are punished developing a better spirit be ¬ tween capital labor and other classes and caring for former service men In any matter in which we act we have tin complete support of every patri ¬ otic citizen because we art only in such vital mat ¬ ters We leave questions not covered in the objects of the American Legion as set down in the pre ¬ amble of the constitution to civic clubs and other organizations As a consequence the American Legion in Louisville is probably the most influential organization in the city cityPersonally Personally I strongly favor horse racing not only because it appeals to me as i sport but because it is essential to the development of the light type of horse needed by the government for remounts Without racing breeding would perish as an in ¬ dustry and in another war we would lind ourselves unable to supply our army Those who would de ¬ prive racing of publicity would kill the sport be ¬ cause it cannot live without publicity In Kentucky we hnve a censor who permits use of wires from the tracks only for newspapers and any handbook em ¬ ployes that operate illegally must shift for them ¬ selves It is not likely that handbooks here are de ¬ pendent on newspapers for information and I be ¬ lieve that suppression of news would only be a di ¬ rect strike at racing itself
