DAMASK AND HIS ANTECEDENTS LOUISIANA DERBY WINNER A ST SIMON HORSE BUT ALSO CARRIES IN HIS VEINS THE MOST SUC ¬ CESSFUL AND POTENT AMERICAN LINES OF BREEDING The Louisiana Derby the first of the races run in the JJnitcd States under the name of Derby was won last Wednesday by Mr II P Whitneys homebred Damask a brown son of All Gold Crinoline II by Broomstick Last November when racing at Pimlico Damask beat a more than good band for the Juvenile Handicap Among the beaten ones were Kinnoul and Carmandale Discussing the race afterwards with trainer James Rowe I ventured the remark that in Damask he appeared to have a colt of more than ordinary racinp merit and was told that fellow has a possible chance for next years Kentucky Derby1 Stranger things have happened than that Damask should in fact win the big Kentucky race at all events he will have condition on his side which from all accounts will be lacking in the eastern contingent on account of the inclemency of the weather Louisville trained horses however are from all reports more advanced and at Louisville I understand are quar ¬ tered the recent SimmsOIivcr purchase Prince Pal and Mr G W Lofts pair On Watch and Donnacona These I hope to be able to run down and interview during the course of the next few weeks Damasks sire All Gold a chestnut son of Persimmon Dame dOr by Bend Or had not up to the appearance of Damask attained to any particular success as a sire There is a prejudice I know against chestnut sons of Persimmon as sires more on account of the failure of the Ascot Gold Cup winner Zinfandel as a sire I suppose than anything and as for myself I will admit to having a decided preference for the bay and brown descendants of llu Welbeck Sultan SultanFollowing Following his Juvenile Handicap win Damask gave a rather indifferent display in the Walden making no show at all behind Dominique and Donnacona On that day however rhc All Gold colt never seemed really to take hold of his bit and there may be a queer streak in him somewhere as there is in many of the descendants of St Simon Damask is bred to improve on any form he displayed as a twoyearold and this is a point which rarely re ¬ ceives the consideration it should at the hands of those who write of horses All Gold cost Mr Whitney a pot of money as a yearling something like S14000 I think it was but the horse never did much on the race course to compensate his owner for his original outlay only winning one race and this the Newmarket Handicap of 1000 as a fouryearold All of you know what a good sire was Persimmon and of how he again headed the winning brood marc sire list last year in England All Golds dam Dame dOr is moreover sister to the best and most influential brocd mare Fairy Gold imported from England perhaps since the days of Galopade for Fairy Gold is the dam of Mr Belmonts champion Fair Play of the successful English race horse and sire Golden Measure of the Wikiup premier Friar Rock of Flittergold and Golden View dam of Rock View all of which is conclusive proof that Fairy Odd has earned for herself an everlasting niche in the equine halls of fame By the way the Friar Rock youngsters are now fast putting in an appearance at Wikiup good ones too plenty of size well formed straight and nimble nimbleAll All Gold is a member of the Maid of Masham family for which there appears to be no such thing as halt and he is bred on the plan of uniting the strains of St Simon and Bend Or which has resulted in the production of such as Sceptre Zinfandel Pommern etc etcIn In the lists of good producing mares published not long ago in Daily Racing Form I endeavored and trust in part succeeded in proving that a mares racing ability has practically nothing to do with her after success as a brood mare Damasks dam Crinoline II ran eleven races as a twoyearold in Mr Whitneys colors in England and had another try as a threeyearold but failed to score Crinoline II is by Broomstick whose daughters ar3 more than certain to attain success as brood mares Broomsticks blood lines are convincing evi ¬ dence of this for outside of his Bonnie Scotland descent his dam Elfris a daughter of Galliard u Two Thousand winner and a most successful sire in France and by Galopin Mavis by the best brood mare sire there ever was the Herod Macaroni Elfs dam Sylvabcllc was a daughter of the Deri winner and a good brood mare sire Bend Or and Sylvabelles dam St ICditha dam of St Gatien by the Herod horse Kingley Vale and this the famous Agnes family Moreover the old saying return the best blood in the dam to the best blood in the dam of the sire still holds good for in Damasks case there is a return of the Galliard of Elf to the Galliard of All Golds granddam Dame Masham Crinolines dam Petticoat is a daughter of he Herod Ahorse and good brood mare sire Hamburg and a member of that same Hanover line you seem to stand willing to sec pass out and so to Elusive by Sir Dixon to Vega by War Dance to one of the best producing marcs ever foaled on this continent the famous Ballet by Planet and this the Maria West family from which come such as the Kentucky Derby winner and all round race horse Exterminator the licet filly Regret Ben Brush Modesty the only filly to win the American Derby the international winner Rensselaer the coming young sire The Manager the Chester Cup winner David Garrick etc Oh yes Ameri ¬ can breeders of bloodstock have somcthing to be proud of in the Maria West family but as for many of the others which trace to an obscure tap root it would have been better for the turf had they never been foaled foaledDamasks Damasks victory in the Louisiana Derby is also suggestive of a St Simon boom For my part I have never been quite able to understand the nonsticcess and can give no logical reason Tor the failure of St Simon horses as sires in this country In every other land in which horse racing is carried on St Simon horses have attained to marked distinction as sires but here in the United States the only stallion of St Simon descent which is at all regular with his winners is good old Sain which though he was foaled as far back as 1894 they are a Continued on second pace DAMASK AND HIS ANTECEDENTS Continued from first page long lived race is still going strong at George J Longs Bashford Manor farm near Louis ¬ ville and what with Donnacona Prince Pal Afternoon and Damask all of them of St Simon descent vc may be in for a genuine St Simon year Galopih 3 i Vedette bay 1872 Flying Duchess Persimmon brown 1SS1 J King Tom I Adeline brown lt 03 Ilampton 10 j Lord
