TRAINING GOSSIP FROM LOUISVILL1 Prince Pal Sterling Damask and Others Work AVell More Horses Arrive from New Orleans LOUISVILLE Ky April 1 The fastest work ¬ outs of Kentucky Derby candidates to date this spring here were indulged in Wednesday at Churchill Downs by Prince Pal and Sterling each of which went one mile The formers time for the distance was 117 while the latter covered it In 148 Hoth liorses ran smoothly and at no time during their Journey were they extended Those who saw the trials were impressed At the conclusion of the trial running neither horse hardly took a long breath Their condition Is highly pleasing to trainers AVill AVallace who has Prince Pal under bis care and C C Aau Meter who is fitting Sterling for the big race raceAngon Angon another Derby eligible also in the Aan Meter stable and which is owned by K H Anderson started with Sterling but he pulled up after going fiveeighths in 107 The pair trav ¬ ersed the first half mile in 3375 and Sterlings time for the threequarters was 121 121There There were a number of Derby candidates out at Churchill Downs in the morning and all of them were called upon to show more speed than in any of their previous efforts Hotter weather for conditioning horses could not have prevailed and the trainers took advantage of it The course was harrowed along the rail where it had become hard ¬ ened and it was in excellent shape for good trials trialsTrainer Trainer Mose Goldblatt sent Damask threequar ¬ ters in 119 with jockey Ambrose up The rider let him gallop along at a good gait for the first half mile in 31 and then he took hold of him At the finish lie was under stout restraint but anxious to run The splendid appearance of the AVhitney colt caused him to be the center of admiration from a large crowd of horsemen and work watchers and his following is increasing daily dailyAVhilo AVhilo trainer Max Ilirsch is devoting consider ¬ able of his time to preparing Donnacona and On Watch for the Derby he is not overlooking Gcrina the threeyearold daughter of The Manager lima and that this filly is in excellent condition is evidenced by her workout of threequarters in 118 yesterday She showed plenty of speed all the way and could have gone faster The others in tlie G W Loft establishment including Donnacona and On Watch were given only good gallops gallopsRichelieu Richelieu and East Indian two of J W Mc Clellands Derby horses were sent a half mile in 31 and threeeighths in 775 respectively They worked together and East Indian was stopped after going threeeighths threeeighthsRacing Racing secretary AVilliam II Shelley arrived la 1 night from Havana where he spent the winter as an official at Oriental Park He will go to Isling ¬ ton at once to prepare for the coming meeting there thereTEN TEN JUVENILES IN J 0 KEENES STABLE STABLEJ J O Keene of the Kentucky State Kacing Com ¬ mission made another trip here from his farm near Islington yesterday to look over his horses whiiit are at the Downs He has twHve two yearolds by Luke McLuke in his stable and they are a good looking band Mr Keene said that lie is unaware of when the racing commission will meet again but in all probability a session will not lie held until after stewards Charles F Price Sam C Nnckols Jr and Andrew Ixonaril meet and pass on the applications for jockeys and trainers licenses This will mark a new departure in these parts as formerly the licenses were acted upon by the commissioners instead of the racing officials officialsTheodore Theodore Cook who is extensively interested with AVilliam T Martin in a large stable of thorough ¬ breds got in yesterday from Hot Springs Ark and lost no time in getting out to the Downs t look over the horses He found them all in fine condition as a result Jockey II J Hurke is in the employ of the J S AVard stable here lie formerly rode for H H Hewitt and was a free lance at New Orleans last winter winterWilliam William Snyiler assistant to starter A H Dadi1 got in from St Louis yesterday morning lit will school the twoyearolds here every morning from now on Another assistant starter was sent to Lexington on a similar mission missionTrainer Trainer Max llirsih gave Donnacona and On AVatcb the two Kentucky Derby hones that he is training for G AV Loft a workout of a mile each Tuesday morning and both made creditable show ¬ ings The former accompanied by Tipnity AVitdiit ran the distance in 130 under restraint while On AVatch with Sweet Mint as a com iaiiion made it in l31fi The Churchill Downs course was thor ¬ oughly dry but still fairly dccy in sand and the workouts were really better than the time siiows siiowsOn On Watch seems to be a loafer when called upon to work and jockey Newton Harrctt who rode him was forced to kick him several times to make him take Iiis task seriously AVhen lie did get him going he showed that he had plenty of speed anil there is nothing wrong with him as far as condition is con ¬ cerned lie is said to have always shown a disposi ¬ tion to take things easy in his work workDONNACONA DONNACONA AVILLING WORKER WORKERAVitii AVitii Donnacona it is entirely different He wants to run all the time and appears to take a keen de ¬ light In outrunning his pacemaker even if it is only by a narrow margin Tippity AVitchct Ms an excel ¬ lent horse to work as he makes it interesting for his companion He is thoroughly lit to go just as far and as fast as Donnacuna Damask with jockey Eddie Ambrose up went threeeighths in 3 as a sort of an opener for a longer workout in a day or so Servitor ran with him and Ambrose had a hard time keeping him in hand so as not to run away from the pacemaker Trainer Mose Goldblatt also had all of the Whitney twoyearolds on the track and they made a favora ¬ ble impression on the large crowd of work watchers watchersSeveral Several more Kentucky Derby candidates have ar ¬ rived from Nexv Orleans including Vtsnvood Sim ¬ pleton and Patches and they were assigned quar ¬ ters at Douglas Park Ed Trotter brought West wood and fourteen oilier horses belonging to the Plorisant Stable and himself High Cost which AV K Harrington owner of the Florisant estab ¬ lishment owns was also included in this consign ¬ ment mentThere There were four horses in the Dr Otto Rogers stable of whidi Simpleton is a member John O which raced with much success last autumn after overcoming the effects of a broken hip and which was taken to New Orleans but not started there came back in excellent condition He is well engaged in stakes this season seasonTrainer Trainer Alex H Gorilon brought six horses be ¬ longing to Frank C Haiti Patches was in training all winter in the Crescent City but he also did not race there II T Uatchlers stable with the wellknown Mali and two others In it also ar ¬ rived from New Orleans OrleansJockey Jockey Otis Willis Was an addition to the riding colony He is under contract to the Florisant Stable and will also pilot the George M Hendriu hoiscs when his engagements do not conflict conflictJ J L Paul and jockey Hert Kennedy his contract rider came in from New Orleans They will go to Lexington in a few days Pan sent six of his own horses and five that he trained for O A Hianchi at Jefferson Park direct to Luxington
