Wiitch which will carry the colors if G W Lofi In the Kentucky Derby were the first of tin eligible for the rich race to be given a workoul over the route of one and onequarter miles tin Derby distance Their time for it was 2115 Thei bad this trial Sunday morning before a crowd o 2000 or more people ami at its conclusion th opinion was freely expressed by horsemen that tin horse which beats Donnacona will have an excellent cuaiice to be returned tlie winner of the Derby DerbyThe The Downs track was in good condition but stil a trifle cuppy in spots when the I Iift ift pair galloped However the horses ran like it was fast and Donnacona was under restraint throughout Oi Watch as ii unl had to be shaken up several time because of his proclivity to loaf loafFor For a change trainer Max Ilirsch used a pace ¬ maker for his two Derby aspirants Sweet Mini being pressed into service for this task Doniiacoiin and On Watch did not start until after Sweet Mini Had gotten under way so as lo give him an oppor ¬ tunity to keep in front of them for a mile When they began at the quartermile post Donnacoiin opened up a short lead on his stable mate and jockey Cliff Robinson was kept busy trying to hold holdThey They ran the first half mile ini3 the three quarters in 120 the mile in 147 and the inili and oneeighth in 200 At the end of the mile Sweet Mint was eased up and the other two went on together for the final quarter Donna ¬ cona gained in favor by his smooth gait and the easy mnnner in which he went about his task Tin ir time for every eighth was almost identical and both horses pulled up looking as fresh as when they started startedSoon Soon after tlie Ix ft Derby pair came off the track trainer Ilirsch had them in the sandpit just outside of his stable and they both rolled about for several minutes This is their favorite pleasure anil they furnish as much delight to the spectators by their antics in the sand as they get out of it themselves themselvesAmong Among the other noted Derby horses seen in ac ¬ tion were Damask and Prince Pal but they went only short distances as a prelude to longer work ¬ outs Damask with jockey K Ambrose up ran a half mile in 0 and galloped out fiveeighths in 301 He ran tlu first quarter in 2V and the threeeighths in 37 For a change he worked alone today todayPrince Prince Pal ran a half mile in 1 and like Damask lie was running easily all tlie way IH also went the first threeeighths in 17 Jockey Rnfus Shilling piloted him ICarly speed seems to be his most valuable asset and he makes it inter ¬ esting for the work watchers from the start startSimpleton Simpleton worked a mile in 1IS and his gallop was a good one oneWESTWOOD WESTWOOD WORKS AT DOUGLAS PARK PARKOvcr Ovcr at Douglas Park West wood was sent a trip of once around the track and the time for his mile was 14 He made it easily and was not nut of restraint at any stage of it Night Wind iccoiipanied him all the way and they ran the first half in 52 the threequarters in 11S The sou of Honeywood Roselawn acted as though he could have run much farther as well as faster and he had a rather speedy pacemaker with him Jockey Mack Garner rode Vestwood VestwoodAlex Alex Jr Dan Lciians Derby colt was another to turn in a mile gallop his time being l4li Jockey John Pit was astride him and he had a tight hold oil him in tlu final part of tlie gallop gallopOther Other Derby cligiblcs given workouts were Sams Hoy mile in 14S and Kast Indian mile in 154 154Westwood Westwood will be sent to Havre de Grace along with several other horses of the Florisant Stable Trainer Kd Trotter and jockey Mack Garner left Sunday at S oclock for Baltimore The horses will be back here before the local meeting opens In the event that anything should prevent Westwood from starting in the Kentucky Derby Garner will have the leg up on Sterling in that race raceAn An extra days racing will be tacked on to the Jlowns season this spring May 31 which will be
