BEST KENTUCKY OAKS ELIGIBLES LINES OF BREEDING OF THE FINE FILLIES WHICH HA VE VEBEEN BEEN NOMINATED TO CONTEND FOR THE HONORS HONORSOF OF THIS AFTERNOONS MOST INTERESTING RA CE To any one at all interested in blood stock breed ¬ ing the pedigrees of the fillies entered this year for the Kentucky Oaks must Ie of great interest find proof if proof be needed that blood stock as bred in this country is improving witli each snc cieding year Perhaps the best or rather those which last year exhibited the best racing form of the sixtyfive fillies entered for the Oaks are Kallipolis Violet Tip Kthel Cray Dresden After idon Panoply Marjorie Hynes Truly Rural Clear ¬ ing Pp Masola Starview Cerma Homely Con ¬ stancy Hiss Choice tiie Ashland Oak winner Clin tonville Distinction Cotton Blossom Flying Flfwr Cleopatra and Busy Signal Of these it is improbable from one caase or another that Knllipolis Truly Rural Clearing lp Starview Cerma Homely Constancy His Choice or Cleopatra will see the post postThis This year the distance of the Kentucky Oaks has been increased to one unl oneeighth miles and the amount of money added to 000 A mile anil an eighth is a far enough distance to ask fillies to run at this season On tli other hand 100 is not a sufficient sum tu add to a race given exclu ¬ sively for fillies three years of age The Oaks surely should be of only secondary importance to the Derby but as matters now stand at Churchill Downs two handicaps the Kentucky and Clark both exceed in value that of the Oaks During the spring and early summer fillies are frequently not at their best and cannot for causejbe made those three years of age and lias once in its history been won by a filly and we must not regret the exception that goes to prove the rule Lot us rither insist on an increased amount of money In ing added to the race so that the best of the fillies may be saved in this ihe spring season of the year for competition against those of their own age and sex sexOf Of the possible starters Busy Signal is a chest rut by Cunard Sweet Alice dam of Bradleys Choice and others by Flying Dutchman which need last year except in the running of the olden Itinl Handicap as if speed rather than staying was her forte Busy Signal this year retains all of her speed but shows no marked improvement in endurance enduranceLorraine Lorraine is bred Kclipse to Herod and is a ineni bei of a good racing family and her dam Amy J is by iendoran son of Sir Modred and her sin the stoutheartfd Ben Brush all of whose progeny are honest and improve with racing as did Lorraine herself last year Judged on Itoth her rast performances anil pedigree Iorrainc if she be delivered at the post fit and well on Oaks day nust be marked down as dangerous dangerousDresden Dresden a wellbred daughter of 1ock View and that good race mare roily Irim by Iirate of ltnzance won her initial start this year and beat 1rince 1al in her farewell appearance over the mile course of last Moreover Dresdens grand dam Kosmo is a daughter of the Matchem sire Miser and Ameriiiie daughter of the Herod sire Glengary dam Arizona by Lexington from one 1y The Cure Win or lose Dresden is worth a lot after paddock use useCOTTON COTTON BLOSSOM EKED TO STAY STAYCotton Cotton Blossom winner last year of the Cincin ¬ nati Trophy can I think be made much better than when he failed to catch Clintonville in the running of the Ashland Oaks Cotton Blossoms sire Luke McLuke is only a beginner yet as a sire a good winner himself of the Domino line and his dam Midge brings in stout staying blood 1 way of Musket Isonomy and Doncaster Cotton Blossoms dam Crownlit is by the Bend Or Hamp ¬ ton Iiorsi Mazagauand the Herod strain is brought into her pedigree by way of Tournament son of Sir Modred and the St Simon strain through Cinderella CinderellaMarjorie Marjorie HyiKs was possessed as a twoyearold of brilliant speed which however she failed to exhibit to any appreciable extent on Derby day Ihe pedigree however of Marjorie Hynes leaves little to be desired for her sire Dick Iinnell is bred to sire good fillies as witness his strains of King from Parmesan Wild Dayrell Hanover and Bonnie Scotland Alice Baird dam of Mar ¬ jorie Hynes is a daughter of the Blacklock horse WoolstlmrJH and she a member of the Maria West family from which come such recent good win irrs as Exterminator and Uegref Marjorie Hynes is destined after her racing days are over for success as a brood mare Kthel Cray was by no means overdone in a racing way last year facing the starter but three times all of her races being run at Saratoga and alwavs racing in the best of company In her first race Kthel Cray played none too prominent a part but on her second appearance after dwelling at the start ran a more than respectable fourth to Con ¬ stancy for the Spinaway His Choice Afternoon Busy Signal Cleopatra etc behind her In her final race Ethel Cray made no sort of show against Man o AVar in the running of the Hopeful and lias not since faced the starter Kthel Gray it may be said is a really well bred daughter of Hessian and Sweet MaVjoram Bringliursts dam by that conscientious little black race horse Dinna Forget son of Loved One which traces on his dams side to Vex sister to Calopin Rose Mar ¬ jorie the granddam is by the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire winner Rosebery Marjorie by the best brood mare sire of them ill Macaroni In all Kthel Cray is one of the best bred as she is one of the most like to improve of all the fillies engaged and worth a thing afterward for use as a brood Another beautifully bred filly is Violet Tip a bay daughter of the champion Fair Ilay which as you know is of Matchem descent Violet Tip is bred on the same plan of mating as are Man o War Mad Hatter and others of uniting the strains of Fair Play and Kock Sand and Violet Tip is a member of the Lady Blessington by Kclipse broncIi juCtheTttr 1iiBFThjnnro rfSffiirjr flu sninfr as the Ijitonia Championship winner Mad Hatter In all Violet Tip must be reckoned as one of the best bred fillies engaged and her worth as a brood mare cannot well be estimated estimatedHIGH HIGH SPEED MISS JEMIMAS FORTE FORTEMiss Miss Jemimas forte last year was speed and still more speed but as to her endurance that must be taken on trust Her race of Derby day in which she was pitted against a live wire like American Ace makes neither for nor against her However I have a lurking suspicion that when put to the test in competition witli those of her own age and sex Miss Jemima will be found to be slightly deficient in stamina and her best course one mile or less The Callinule blood of her dam Vaila through Fariman and also that of Macaroni through his son Macheath is all in her favor but nothing of great racing merit has ever come from British Jiieen by the Coronation branch of the No S family from which Miss Jemima is descended For all this Miss Jemima on account of her speed and breeding will some day be an ornament to some ones stud studPanoply Panoply last July struck a good winning vein at Aiiuednct and Kmpir City but one losing Saratoga venture brought her years racing to a close llow ver Panoply is a first out Pimlico winner this yiar and is a wellbred daughter of Peter Pan and Inaugural dam of Flags by Voter and a member of the Queen Mary family through the iMher unusual Iin of Silver Boll and Pet by Kettledrum Panoply is another bred to be of use in after years as a brood mare and on account of her winning demonstration at Pimlico must if sent for the race be given ilun and proper consid ¬ eration erationOne One of my favorites at last Saratoga time was Afternoon and greatly did I regret her unfortunate aicident just as she was coming to her best After inon is a medium size an attractive bay daughter of Prince Palatine and Matinee by Broomstick v hich has for a dam the dual Oaks winner Sir Dixons daughter Audience and this of course the great winner producing family of Maggie B B 1rince Palatine wnich as you know is of St Simon descent should be well suited by such an outbrcd mare as Matinee in whose pedigree there irt to be found strains of Bonnie Scotland Billet Hindoo Aniiu ul1 Australian no less than three tnies in all of which lie is himself lacking Taken friin any standpoint Afternoon must be considered i ne of the most attractively bred fillies eligible foi this years Kentucky Oaks OaksThe The best of the probable starters I take to be as jidged more particularly on their breeding are Afternoon Miss Jemima Violet Tip Kthel Cray Diesden and Ijirraine any one of which will some day bring credit to ihe blood stock breeding in diistry of the Tinted States and of this select little party of six commend me best for use as lit coil mares to Dresden Violet Tip and Kthel Cray and to Afternoon if chosen as a mate for some horse of Matchem descent
