MOVING TOWARD PRESS CENSORSHIP Ilace horse breeders have protested against a bill prohibiting interstate transmission of race informa ¬ tion They say without this information there would be little betting and without betting races would fall off and without racing breeding of highclass liorses would be discouraged discouragedThe The objectors officials of the Kentucky Thor ¬ oughbred Association and other similar organiaa lions ought to know their business conditions They deny any other interest in the betting inci ¬ dent than that it helps to stimulate the breeding of fine horses horsesThe The bill it seems to us may bo attacked on another line namely That it is another advance of professional moralists toward universal censor ¬ ship Whatever the professional moralist does not approve is for him material for a crusade to im ¬ pose his opinion on the rest of humanity a crtisado which gives the professional moralist something to do and plenty of publicity ending with the de ¬ lightful sensation of making others submit submitIIow IIow far this passion for forbidding private habits is going t go no one can guess Certainly it is creating a social atmosphere in America that self respecting men ami women will fiiul it hard to breathe In time will come we think a reaction as violent as the prohibitory regime is extreme The pendulum will swing back as far one way as it swings the other Sensible minds without fanati ¬ cism will deplore this as they deplore the present tendency Itut that wont prevent it If it can IK prevented at all it must be by opposing ex ¬ tensions of moralistic censorship as they appear Chicago Daily Tribune
