MAN 0 WAR UNDER COLORS SATURDAY Vast Army of Thoroughbred lovers to See Mr Rid ¬ dles Champion Bun in Belmont Stakes XEW YOUK X Y June 10 The spring meet ¬ ing of the Westchester Racing Association will come to an end Saturday when a program of varied attractions will be offered for the enjoyment of the vast army of racing enthusiasts which is iiow paying homage to the thoroughbred thoroughbredFirst First of all there will be a chance to see the inec in parable Man War in action again as he is a candidate for the 10009 Belmont Stakes That will be something to tell our grandchildren about as the great son of Fair 1lay is of such exceed ¬ ing quality that he is destined to occupy an endur ¬ ing niche in the history of the thoroughbred in the Inited States His appearance in the Withers Stakes was the occasion of a great gathering of the faithful and the manner in which he established a new American racing record for a mile caused him to bt hailed as a phenomenon phenomenonWhen When Man o War ran the mile in 135 the opinion was practically unanimous that he could have gone on and laced as far as thoroughbreds are asked to go There were a few however who said they would not acclaim him as a world beater until he had shown his ability to beat a good horse over a long distance a mile and an eighth having been his limit to date The opportunity for this test will be the Uelmont Stakes as it is at one mile and threeeighths and in it he will perhaps have John T Grier and Wildalr from the Whitney divi ¬ sion as well as others to overcome James Rowe was quoted after thj Withers as saying that lie would try Man o War once more and he evidently had the Bolmont Stakes in mind when he spoke John P Grier it is generally understood is the best threeyearold Harry Payne Whitney owns Wildair may be used as a pacemaker but pace ¬ makers would appear to be superfluous when Man ii War races as he takes the track and gallops his opponents into easy defeat He can be waited with of course and in many of his races last year he came from behind This was notably true in the Hopeful Stakes when Constancy had a long lead on the upper turn only to succumb to one of Man o Wars meteoric rushes rushesThe The Itelmont is one of the oldest of the three yearold fixtures being first run for in 1S 7 when Hie filly Ruthless owned by Francis Morris won it with Gilpatrick in the saddle Our own Jimmy Howe rode the winners of 1871J and 1873 with Joe Ianils and Springbok respectively so that the Virginian has a warm sK t in his heart for this race James Mclaughlin rode no fewer than nix winners of the Itelmont Forester in 1S81 George Kenney in 1SS3 Panique in 1SS4 Inspector B in ISfii Hanover in 1SS7 and Sir Dixou in 1SS8 The history of the race is studded with the names of great horses that have won it The record for the last four years is indicative of the quality of the race IDUi Friar Kock 1017 llourless 118 Johren and 1010 Sir Barton The victor Satur ihiv will be in the highest equine society
