LATONIA FAVORITES PROVE FAILURES Veteran Leochares Proves He Can Still Hun Fast and Defeats Truly Rural BY J L DEMPSEY DEMPSEYLATONIA LATONIA Ky June 24 Edward 15 McLeans veteran Leocharcs showed that he was still capable of putting up a determined battle despite his age for he engaged in a grueling stretch struggle with the lightly weighted Truly Uural and succeeded in the last stride Much of the credit for his vic ¬ tory was due to jockey Lyke who gave a superior riding exhibition and found Leochares fully re ¬ sponsive The duel between Broomsticks son and daughter Lcochares and Truly Rural being both sired by him came in the feature race the Sweep Purse having an added value of 2300 at a mile and a sixteenth and serving as the outstanding feature of todays program There were only five starters Captain Mac being a forced absentee on account of ineligibiliry to the race Truly Rural with her light impost raced into a good lead at once pursued by Rapid Day with Lyke keeping Leochares well forward but under restraint There was no material change in the respective positions of the starters until the home turn was reached where Rapid Day gave way to Leochares challenge but Truly Rural held resolutely to the lead and it was only in the last sixteenth that Leochares suc ¬ ceeded in getting to the Whitney colors carrier From there on to the last stride they ran on even terms Leochares with seeming intelligence of what was required of him making an extra effort to the last to get his head in front and succeeded Rapid Day was ten lengths in back of the pair and headed the others in third place placeDelightful Delightful weather made amends for the offday card provided for race goers this afternoon and the usual large attendance was again on liand to wit ¬ ness better sport than was expected Most of the finishes were of the close variety and the fast track caused bigger fields to make the contests in most of the dashes dashesPut Put Dunnes Harry Purgoyne accounted for the opening race from Military Girl with Tom Saun iiers following the nalr Military Girl was a Another favorite to succumb was Golden Autumn regarded in high favor because of her recent fast trials She lauded in second place the winner turning up in Mary Gaffney Peppery Polly might have been the winner here but for the frequent interference from which she suffered sufferedBRINGHURST BRINGHURST IS A DISAPPOINTMENT DISAPPOINTMENTRringhurst Rringhurst was the third disappointment by his failure to finish better than second Duke of Devon ¬ shire leading him home homeNapoo Napoo was given the call in the fourth race but he suffered the fate of the previous choices the winner here turning up in Jetsam from Judge liudrow Napoo landing in third place placeWilliams Williams Uios claimed Sim God winner of the sixtli race for 2900 2900Jockey Jockey Kennedy gamely returned to the saddle this afternoon He rode Sun God and Paris Maid the last two winners winnersCaptain Captain Mac was ineligible under the conditions to start in the fifth race and was ordered with ¬ drawn drawnSixteen Sixteen of the Edward W Simms horses here in charge of trainer William Wallace will be shipped to Saratoga at the close of racing here The others in the string that have campaigned in Kentucky will be sent to the Simms Xalapa Farm near Paris Ky to be rested until fall fallJockey Jockey Joe Kederis who had his license sus ¬ pended for grasping the bridle of a horse in the race in which lie had a mount has decided on his permanent retirement from the turf He will go into business in Seattle Wash where he also owns an extensive farm farmE E R Itradley has decided on sending fourteen horses to race at Saratoga The twelve remaining ones he has been racing here will be sent to Idle Hour Farm to be turned out until fall racing comes on in Kentucky KentuckyW W W Taylor had to cancel his riding engage ¬ ments for the afternoon on account of illness illnessJockey Jockey J Smallwood was suspended for five days by the stewards for rough riding while in the stretch astride Golden Autumn AutumnT T E Ruell owner of High Voltage was fined a nominal sum by the stewards for not conforming to the rule requiring the naming of jockeys on intended starters by 9 a in inJockey Jockey S Hoyie who met an injury at Lexington Ky where lie fell from Iwin will not resume rid ¬ ing against until next fall He is at present at Idle Hour Farm FarmJohn John Lowe intends to turn out part of his ex ¬ tensive racing string and campaign only his best on Canadian tracks after the close of racing here hereWith With a prospect of at least a dozen of the best here starting in the Enquirer Handicap to be run next Saturday the race will have an approximate value of 7500 to the winner in addition to an ornate and costly plate donated by Edward 15 McLean Much interest is Iteing manifested in the outcome and the management is making extensive arrangements to accommodate another record crowd
