AUDACIOUS WINS CARTER HANDICAP Carofnl an Added Starter Takes Clover Stakes Aqueducts Largest Crowd NEW YORK X Y July 5 The national lioli ilay combined with a good program which had t as features the running of the Carter Handicap and Clover Stakes for fillies attracted the largest gathering of racing enthusiasts ever seen within the gates of the Queens County Jockey Club at j Aqueduct today Tiie clubhouse grandstand lawns and paddock were packed to suffocation and de ¬ spite the many discomforts a splendid days sport was enjoyed although favorites failed their back ¬ ers during the afternoon afternoonM M L Schwartzs Audacious accounted for the Carter Handicap overtaking the leaders entering the stretch and winning easily Constancy hung on more gamely than her stable companion Lion dOr which quit suddenly Naturalist slow to get going finished fast when clear and nosed out Mad Hatter for the small end of the stake stakeThe The Clover Stakes for twoyearold fillies was marred by withdrawals but the addition by W J Salmon of his crack filly Careful lent increased interest to the contest Nancy Lee P A Clarks improved youngster was made a strong favorite the fickle public overlooking the former idol Careful racing to her best form quickly went to the front and held sway all the way but had to be ridden out at the finish as Nancy Lee was closing courageously after being outrun during the early racing Prodigy had no difficulty in out ¬ staying Jacobimi which was done soon after the start startCareful Careful has evidently returned to her early Maryland form She has now won eight races out of nine starts Her race today was good enough to mnke her dangerous in any company companyAudacious Audacious is at the top of his form There are those wiio contend that seveneighths to a mile is as far as Audacious can go Naturalist ran a sparkling race once he got going He had to go around his opponents and if he doesnt get into one of his sour spells he will take a lot of beat ¬ ing up to amjjfiand an eighth TTRtil Debnlilou ftllatWfca2ti nthrjKnipTthetWinf leld Steeplecha e proved interesting but thereafter it was only a canter for Decisive which fenced cleanly and raced in close pursuit of the Green tree Stable representative until he fell dowii Deba dou was remounted and finished the course courseQuite Quite a surprise was furnished the spectators in the opener when the Celt filly Mile Vivian out ¬ stayed the speedy Jyntee in a rousing finish in which Ted Rice outrode Zoeller ZoellerTodays Todays crowd was the largest in the history of the course As far as the top of the stretcli men were perched on the railing and any other point of vantage which they could find Every train was thronged that left both the New York and Brooklyn terminals
