EMPIRE CITY OPENS TODAY Small but HighClass Field Named for Inaugural Feature Thunderstorm and On Watch Win Main Races of Final Days Sport at Aqueduct j NEW YORK N Y July 13 The racing scene will shift tomorrow from Aqueduct to Yonkers where the Empire City Racing Association will be ¬ gin its summer meeting of sixteen days with the running of the Empire City Handicap as the prin ¬ cipal attraction of opening day Successful as was the Yoiikcrs meeting of last year predictions are being freely made that the coming one will far surpass it in every way Certainly no better program was ever arranged by the Empire City Racing Association than the one offered this year A stake race has been provided for every racing day except two anil both the values of the feature events and the overnight races have been in ¬ creased No purse will be of less value than 1000 and the stakes range in value from 0000 down to 2500 a total of 01500 being given away in stakes alone aloneFor For tomorrows opening the Empire City Handi ¬ cap of 6000 guaranteed at one mile and an eighth is expected to fnrnish a contest that will delight the large crowd sure to be piescnt unless a sudden change In weather brings a heavy rainstorm Of the original fortysix nominations to this feature only five are named to go but what the field may lack in size is more than offset by the high quality of acceptances With such wellknown stars of the turf as Audacious Boniface Dr Clark Mad Hatter and Naturalist making up the field patrons of the Yonkers course are assured a real race a struggle between equine giants fighting every inch of the way from the rise of the barrier until the finish line is reached reachedIn In addition to the stake feature the Katonah Highweight Handicap is offered as a supplementary attraction and a large and fine field of sprinters are programmed to contest it with such speedy ones as Old Rosebud Lion dOr War Mask Hasten On Quietude Sandy Beal among others oC the probable starters startersIndeed Indeed everything points to an auspicious open ¬ ing at the Hill Top course and a meeting on par with the best bestThe The Speculation Selling Handicap at one mile was the stake feature for the closing day of the most successful meeting ever held at the Aqueduct track As a secondary attraction a handicap at six and a half furlongs drew a small field of good sprinters sprintersR R T Wilsons Thunderstorm proved the best in the stake on tracing his opponents from the start and winning easily from Elmendorf which Cf me from the rear Thrift finished third easily Kashmir and Tom McTaggart ran far below their recent good form formOn On Watch had little trouble in winning the sprint feature overtaking the leaders when ready and drawing clear to win easily Super came from far back and outstayed Billy Kelly for second place Billy Kelly hung on well under his crush ¬ ing impost and held third place safe from Marie Miller which tired finally finallyLeo Leo L was sold by K H Shannon to J Johnson at private sale The horse will be schooled by Ills new owner for crosscountry racing racingP P H Jones who campaigned a racing stable in Kentucky and Canada some years ago but who is now making his home in Cuba was a visitor today Mr Jones reports that vast improvements were being made at Oriental Park ParkDaydue Daydue and Frank Waters will be trained for their future races by C Buxton BuxtonS S McXaughton has engaged jockey S Sneidman to ride for the Foreign Stable during jockey Kum mers confinement in the hospital due to ills in ¬ jury received when lie fell while astride of Costly Colours Monday MondayThimble Thimble was claimed out of the first race by Frank F Tannery for 12000
