TWO YEAR OLD CHAMPION Saratoga May Reveal the Leader in Decision of Flash Special Hopeful Sanford Me ¬ morial and Other Juvenile Events SARATOGA SPRINGS X Y July 2U The car ¬ nival of twoyearold racing that will begin witli the running a week from today of the Flash and finish on the hist day of the meeting with the renewal of the Hopeful the Saratoga Associa ¬ tion will stage here in the mouth of August will eclipse in sustaining brilliancy the best twoyear old racing East or West of the current year It will be worthy in every respect of the most cher ¬ ished traditions of the big track and vastly more interesting especially in anticipation And it will yield handsomely in gold to the successful young ¬ sters The Saratoga Associations juvenile specials great and small will have a gross value of about 125000 The value of the Hopeful this year will exceed fliOOOO fliOOOOTin Tin Special which will be run the second Satur ¬ day of the meeting this year as in the past will be the most interesting of the Saratoga juvenile events to sportsmen because it is the most sports ¬ manlike The Special is strictly a subscribers affair The Saratoga Association does no more than stage it and present the owner of the winner with a golden trophy The subscribers race for their own money and the Special generally is a cham ¬ pionship affair because the youngsters that take part in it are not nominated until after the 1st of June by which time from year to year they have shown their nality privately at least Almost invariably it attracts the best that race and this years Special will be no exception to the ordinary rule ruleThe The order of the running of the Saratoga juvenile specials will be Flash five and a half furlongs August 2 Schuylerville fillies exclusively five and a half furlongs August o United States three quarters of a mile August 7 Sanford Memorial threequarters of a mile August 11 Saratoga Spe ¬ cial threequarters of a mile August 14 Kentucky fillies exclusively five andca half fHrlpngsAugust 10 Grub Bug Handicap threeqinirters of a mile August IS Grand Union threequarters of a mile August 121 Albany Handicap threequarters of a mile August 23 Adirondack Handicap threequar ¬ ters of a mile Ansust 25 Spinaway fillies exclu ¬ sively five ami a half furlongs August 2S Hope ¬ ful threequarters of a mile August 31 31STARS STARS OF THE YEAR In other years the twoyearolds that filled tin Saratoga races were colts and fillies that had made their reputations about New York or in the West in the months of May June and July This year eventhing is different A cold wet spring retard ¬ ed the orderly education of the stars Trainers of youngsters of supposed quality were reluctant to have their systematic development of their cracks inter ¬ rupted by bad weather they waited on settled conditions with the result that the work of classi ¬ fication must be done up here next mouth Harry Iayue Whitney seems to have shown a couple of fast colts and one or two good fillies John II Uosseter has sent to the post a Californiaraised youngster that has sold for a reported price of 150000 Vossibly Richard T Wilson has uncovered his baud James W McClelland has permitted a couple of his good colts to show some of their quality Hut no discriminating student of form has yet conceded that any youngster that will have proved at the end of the year that he or she de ¬ serves to be ranked with such as Colin Uncle Peter Pan Salvidere Dominant Regret Sunbriar Campfire and Man o War has shown The fact that Saratoga racing must develop the champion colt or filly of 1920 invest the renewals of the Special the Flish the Spinaway the Grand Union the Sanlnrd Memorial the United States and the Hopeful with rare anticipatory interest interestJust Just what youngsters the specials will draw it is impossible to foretell That any of the winning joungsters of the earlier meetings will win any of them no man with regard for his reputation as a prophet will undertake to say There are too many colts and fillies coming to the post from day to day and winning maiden races away off Too many youngsters the public was prepared to call great are being beaten unexpectedly as Dimmesdale and Brigadier General and Careful The Bohemian and Sporting Blood were beaten at Aqueduct and Broom Spun was beaten at Yonkers YonkersBut But all these partially tried youngsters as well as Touch Me Not Tryster Prudery Crocus Pluri hus Star Voter Jeg Intrigante General 7 M Gomez General Meuocal Kirklivingtou Bluffer and others have shown something now and then are in the Saratoga juvenile specials with the supix sedly formidable unknowns of the great stables and the small stables the mystery of whose form is yet to be revealed
