JOCKEY N BARRETT SHOWS PROMISE Lofts Stable Rider Devolopinc into Finiahsd Saddle Artist Protoje of late Baker Brothers NEW YORK N Y July 20 Some commenda ¬ tion as to the riding of jockey Newton Barrett is iu onler This jockey has shown capability as a saddle artist since he came under the wing of M Hirseh trainer for the G W Loft stable Bnrrett has been piloting the horses of the Loft stable successfully of late and he seems to get out of his mounts about all there is in them Of course he makes mistakes at times but he is developing into a finished rider I ist Thursday lie rode perfect races mi Mcrning Face and Gladiator His good ride on On Watch earlier in the week when the son of Colin defeated Minto II handily is an indlesition that Barrett can ride well wellThe The contract on jockey Barrett was secured by Illrscli for Mr Loft ut Louisville last spring for a goodly price Barrett was developed by Grover and Hundley Baker western turfmen both of whom died a year or so igo Barrett aided HirJch in preparing tlie colts Douuacoim and On Watch for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Down Domin rona was considered the better of the two by Hirseh but Barrett always contended that On Watch would beat Dmiacona in the Derby which he did finish ng third after following the others for a mile Trainer Hirseh gave Barrett the choice of his mounts in the Derby and he selected On Watch W J OBrien rode Doimacona Barrett always claimed that On Watch was much the best colt In the Kentucky Derby mid had as much attention been given his preparation for the big race as Dcn iiacona he would have been returned the winner
