TRIBUTE TO H DE COURCY FORBES With great regret do I record the death on July 1 at his Paris home 37 Avenue de 1Alma of my dear old friend Henry De Courcy Forbes who had been in illhealth for years as the result of a stroke and had nearly reached the alloted span of man as estimated by the Psalmist I recall a letter from De Courcy early in the war wherein he wrote Its Sardanapale compared to a donkey on the French and English against the Germans but he was always of a sanguine temperament about everything as all his friends can confirm An American by birth and an intimate friend of the late Mr James R Keene he thought the Keene horses such as Colin Commando Domino and Sysonby could heat the world as he would have said and always favored an Americanbred horse if it happened to be running when he was racing here Still for all that De Courcy was a splendid judge of form especially before reaching the race course where he frequently got put off and would listen to any rubbish Such was th case of the last week ho ever raced in England this being at the Newmarket Houghton fixture of 1914 when I was staying for the meeting in the same house with him Everything then went wrong with Forbes and he raved altout the judges de ¬ cisions being wrong that the jockeys had pulled the horses which he backed and that failed to win and generally behaved like a man whose nervous system was going wrong as it did alas the fol ¬ lowing spring Extremely handsome in his younger days a superb dancer and fond of society Forbes was deservedly popular being a most agreeable am wellinformed man who knew almost everybody worth knowing and I have heard him rather aptly described as the Citizen of the World He had a few horses with Joseph Butters and won the Bwklesby Stakes of lull by the aid of Mr Peeper The last horse to carry his colors blue white spots was Attrait in a Juvenile Plate at Alex ¬ andra Park on April IS ltl4 Audax in Horse and Hound
