MILITARY RACE AT LAUREL.! 1 I Le Gardon Winner of Contest in Which Army Officers Are the Riders. LAUREL, Md., October 25. A military race added tone to an ordinary card at- Laurel this after- noon and prpvided interesting sport. Six thorough- i breds, one the property of the United States govern-"ment and the remainder owned by officers of the United States army, made up the field. All were ridden by army officers from Camp Meyer; Va. The winner turned up in Le Gardon, a six-year-old gelded son of Negofol Goma, owned by Col. W. G. Gambrill and ridden by Major Chandler, the ranking officer of all the riders engaged. Chari Babe, owned and trained and also ridden by Lieut. Bar-den, finished second, nnd Yestersun, ridden by Lieut. Taylor, third. The race was at a mile and a sixteenth. From a moving start Yestersun went to the front rounding the first turn. Chari Babe and Le Gardon moved into contention through the backstretch and Major Chandler took the lead when he brought the Negofol gelding through on the inside rail at the half-mile post. Yestersun followed In game -pursuit of the winuer, but went id the outside fence when turning for home and .this cost the Peep o Day gelding second place, for he came again and would have overtaken Chari Babe in a few more strides. Thomas Cljrde presented the victorious rider with a piece of plate. Step Lightly, starting for the first time since her victory in the Futurity, scored a hollow victory oyer a band of two-year-olds, going three-quarters in the most pretentious race on the days card. Step Lightly made all the pace and won easing up, with S. A. Cloptons Twopair and General J; M. Gomez in second and third place, respectively. F. Burlew, acting for J. H. Rosseter has sold the"" two-year-olds Thoughtless Beauty and Perplexity to S. A. Clopton. Rollicking Airs, Good Hope and Fnrmingdale have been lost to the Rosseter Stable through claims and there are more in the barn which will be disposed of before going into winter quarters. yJack, Atkinand iGene Normile arrived from New fork.tortajf ijuaua , Jotjkey taBtetofihfgltnoj Club, which: is--choduled to open Thanksgiving Day. ...,-. . Fred Shelke, who trained the Canadian division of the J. K. L. Ross stable this year. Is an arrival from Montreal. He brought a band of mares from the Ross farm above Montreal to theone near here, where they will be bred. Mr. Shelke returns to Canada tomorrow with several yearlings. J. Heupel, who. was injured in a fall early at this meeting, will return to the saddle at Pimllco. Mick Daly has suffer.! a relapse of the stomach trouble which confined him to his bed last week and has been taken to a Baltimore hospital. Jockey O. Fairbrother leaves for Cuba at the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting to ride for Senor A. H. Diaz. R. S. Eddy, general manager of the Fair Grounds track, also was among the4 days arrivals. James. Rowe arrived at Pimlico this morning from Kentucky, bringing John P.- Grier and Damask, H. P. Whitneys unsuccessful candidates in the Latonia Championship Stakes. Senor Alvarez ha3 obtained first call on the services of the apprentice G. Bulcroft lor the coining meeting at Oriental Park. J. Butwell may do the heavyweight riding for this establishment.
