AUSTRALIAN HORSE TRAINING FEATS Trainer R. Bradford, first second and third in the Caulfield Cup of last year, is not an un-equriled performance in an important race. The marvelous record registered by John Hill in the Adelaide Cup of 1881 has been overlooked by modern record recorders. John Hill was the trainer who prepared Auraria for the Melbourne Cup, Broken Hill for the Australian Cup and Newstead for the Maribyrnong Plate, to say nothing of many other celebrated victories. He ranked as the greatest trainer South Australia hxs known, and before he died, a few months ago, when asked to state what race lie looked upon with more pleasure than any other he replied: "The Adelaide Cup of 1881. I ran first, second and third and fourth, and I dont think any one will ever do that in a Cup again." The race went to Totalisator, with Rothschild pecond, Venus third and First Water fourth. Hill trained the band, and declared to win with Totalisator, and piite humorously remarked before the contest that he would not be a bit surprised if lie caught all the place money. Totalisator was owned by Simeon Barnard, Rothschild ran in the nomination of W. Pile, Venus carried the colors of John Crozier and First Water was second string for Mr. Pile. Beacon, in the Melbourne Leader, wrote that .on the day the Caulfield Cup was run Bradfield remarked: "A hit of luck will make all the difference. Whichever one of my three secures the best run will win, and they may finish first, second and third." For good judgment that is hard to beat. The scribe also wrote that the stable commission for Lucknow averaged about 100 to i, and that Robinson and Clarks winnings were just under 0,000. The Caulfield Cup has been a great race for these owners. They had the winning ticket in Tattersalls sweep on it when Bronzetti won in 1917, and have landed the race for the past two years with their own horses.
