BRUCE LOWE NO. 8 FAMILY Great in Its Sires, Mares and Racers of Excellence. ; Beeswing- Its Effulgent Star Her Branches Thrive and Flourish in America. . , BV EX U.K. If any lingering doubt remains concerning the Jlruee Lowe conclusion, that certain thoroughbred families are more productive of sires and sires capable of transmitting sire excellence 1o their descendants, it is dispelled by the sire attainments of members of the Xc. S family, especially by the sire success of those which trace back in the female line to Beeswing. No. 8 family sires capable of transmit tine sire excellence include Mich a;: Hellenes sire. Sultan, which was also the sire of I.a.v Middleton. Ion, sire of "Wild Dayrell and Tadmoro. tlie Matcheni connection, Melbournes sire Iliimphrey Clinker and Newminsier. sire of Ixrd Clifdcn and Hermit. Newminstcr was, of course, a son of that good race mare Beeswing and to Beeswing also trace Melton, St. Serf. Ayrshire, Perth, the recent Australian sire success Liuucrc: Transvaal, which sires so many hardy horses for the Domino line. Sweep, sire of Kternal. Bon Hciume ami Ij-ouardo II. and the coming success as a siie maik the prediction Sun Briar. Members of the Beeswing family are also noted for their success as race horses. This is one of the best families, best in all respects, of them all. To that good foundation No. S mare Appolonin by The Colonel, through Zeiia by Emilias, traces that good Australian sire Chester, and to Eclogue, her sister, a number of good ones abroad. The Eclogue branch is best brought .forward by -Wii.w-.gf Ethel by Kt.bollcri: Better. I think, or rather more influential, are members of the Apoloniu branch as sires than as race horses, but even this branch of the Xo. S family is nothing like s good, either for race horses or sires, as the Beeswing. Herein. I take it. is Bruce Lowes great oversight, in that ho rather lumped his families as a whole, instead of drawing particular attention to the special excellence of their different branches. LESSER LIGHTS OF NO. S FAMILY. Winners tracing to Legacy, by King Fergus, are few and far between. Pewet. by Tandem, however, bred two good daughters in Clinkerina and Pauline. Clinkerina. the dam of Humphrey Clinker and Pauline, ancestress of Cathedral, Vamlerdeckeii. Castlerengh. The Bush. Andover ami Pirate of Penjiance. The Clinkerina branch, however, since Humphrey Clinkers day has not been productive of any really influential horse. Top Gallant was good, but not great, and he a good winner in England. Powets half-sister Evelina was the dam of Orville, and this branch is also rather unpiodiictivo of high-class horses of late years. The Gentle Kitty branch of the Xo. S family is j1s good. Gentle Kitty foaled the sisters Catherine and Mary. To Catherine trace the sire of St. nations dam St. LMitha. Kingley Vale. Mundeii, Rapid Ithonc. P.rothcr to Straff, id. etc. P.ut the best lihe to Catherine lives on in France, where Bnleines granddaughter Pergola, by The P.aron. is ancestress of many. In fact, I he best of Catherine is brought forward by Pergola, whose daughters Perla, Piistina and Pnsaccla. all by the Herod horse Dollar, are the foundation stones of many a French winning combination. To Mary, by way of Scotch Kate, trace the Two Thousand Guineas winner Sweeper and Frank Sill, as well as Pradella, but the best of this line I rather think is handed on by Miss Wilkes, ancestress of British Queen, and to her trace such as Miss Jemima. Tithonus. Mend and Fugleman. When all is said, however, the P.eeswing branch of the Xo. S family is best, best for race horses a it is for sires, and any breeder who lias a couple of Beeswing mares on his estate can count himself lucky, indeed.
