DERB Y HISTOR Y PA ST AND PRESENT WINNERS OF THE MOST FAMOUS OF OUR THREEYEAR OLD RACES EXISTENT AND NONEXISTENT Growing interest in the approaching decision of the Kentucky Derby serves to recall that other cities than Louisville have had and some still have their Derbys At present in addition to the big Louisville race the Latonia Derby Canadian Derby and Hamilton Derby engross at their appointed times the at ¬ tention of the respective communities they serve most closely Days were when there were other and highly important Derbys annually run over race tracks in the United States of which Chicagos American Derby of glorious memories was lirst and foremost There never was and is not now a race that rivaled Washington Parks famous Derby in drawing power In its late years it was never witnessed by less than 05000 spectators who had paid at the gate and on one occasion the paid admissions exceeded 74 000 In a lesser Way but as intensely was Kan Francisco annually interested in the outcome of its Cal ¬ ifornia Derby St Louis in its St Louis Derby New Orleans in its Crescent City Derby and Memphis in its Tennessee Derby This seems an appropriate time to present the condensed histories of our non ¬ existent and existent Derbys and here they are The American Derby was first run in 1881 and from that year until 1 H the last year of its decision was the real blue riband of transferred to Aqueduct where it is now a per ¬ manent fixture In 191S the name of the race was changed to the Dwyer Stakes in honor of the memory of the famous turfmen the Dwyer Bros the owners of
