DERBY CANDIDATES WORK Much Activity at Both Louisville Tracks and Numerous Visitors LOUISVILLE Ky April 3 The host workout of any of the Kentucky Derby cligibles reported to date this year was indulged in this morning at Churchill Downs by Coyne and Brother Batch the pair running one and oneeighth miles in 150 They covered the first mile in 14 and in the final furlongs they were eased up The two horses ran head and head practically all of the way They ran the first quarter in 24 half mile in 49 fiveeighlhs in 102 threeuartcrs in 115 and seven eighths in 1201 Trainer C C Van Meter waved their riders to slow down after going a half mile and both horses were under stout re ¬ straint for the remainder of the way wayBrother Brother Hatch displayed no evidence of cither throat or wind trouble when he pulled up and Mel vine Thompson his rider said that he ran freely all the way and was not breathing hard at any stage f it This horse has been wearing a hood about his throat while undergoing treatment and he had it on while being warmed up this morn ¬ ing but it was removed when lie was set down for his workout workoutIt It has been a long time since as many racing enthusiasts journeyed to Churchill Downs to wit ¬ ness the workouts as were on hand this morning More than 500 turned out and by actual count there were fiftytwo autos exclusive of those owned by horsemen and jockeys parked on the stable side of the track Douglas Park also drew a large crowd and numerous workouts WITJ in order there Both tracks had dried out to a fast stage and real spring weather served to muke conditions more pleasant pleasantAt At the Bcechmont track Muskallonge showed an ¬ other good move running a mile in l40 He gave every indication that he wanted to run much faster than he was allowed He went the first half in 52 52Red Red Legs galloped threequarters in l17if at Douglas Park He was eased up in the final quar ¬ ter after running the first quarter in 24 and the half mile in 48 48Sir Sir Thomas Kean Lloyd Gentrys Derby candi ¬ date galloped seveneighths of a mile in 135 He was hard held all the way especially In the last eighth eighthTrainer Trainer Van Meter put his entire stable with the exception of the twoyearolds through fast paces at the Downs this morning Marjorie llynes and Mighty Mat worked threequarters of a mile together in 114 the former was timed the first threeeighths in 34 She began behind her stablemate but outran him all the way Grace and Homaid went threequarters in lilaVs the first fiveeighths in 101 Colonel Taylor and Elpass worked threequarters in 115 with the former under restraint throughout Ho seems to be a vastly improved horse over last year both in looks and speed speedUnited United Verde C W Marks Kentucky Derby candidate which is suffering from a quarter crack is galloping again and the injury is rapidly yielding to treatment Trainer George V Barnes is still hopeful of getting him to the post in the big event eventBen Ben Bolt J W RclPs Derby hope worked a mile in 150 at the Downs this morning Jockey Jack Hanover had a good Jiold of him from the start and he could have gone much faster fasterR R L Baker motored down from Lexington this morning and closed a deal with jockey Mack Garner whereby he will acquire the latters services during the coming Lexington meeting Garner will ride for Van Meter at the Downs and Latonia LatoniaEd Ed Trotter came in from New Orleans His horses were shipped from the Crescent City this moning he said saidCharlton Charlton Klrod was an arrival from Havana where he spent the winter in the employ of the track trackFor For a change Flags was on his good behavior this morning and took kindly to a workout of threequarters of a mile mileGeorge George Howe was jt belated arrival from New Orleans lie witnessed a mile gallop of Centimeter in 145 at the Fair Grounds several mornings ago and said that the G L Blackford colt is in grand condition
