FORTY SEVENTH KENTUCKY DERBY Select Band of Fifteen Named to Contend This Afternoon for the Greatest GreatestAmount Amount of Money in the Derbys History Fifteen young blue bloods of horsedom have been named to start in the Kentucky Derby today They are the picked ones of their age and a glorious struggle for the honors and pelf of the big race is in immediate prospect Whatever the outcome may be that much is sure and the thou ¬ sands who have journeyed to Louisville from all sections of this broad land will be well rewarded by the thrilling spectacle of the noble striving of the beautiful creatures which have served as the magnet attracting them to Kentuckys chief city cityA A race studded with the splendor of great achievements by famous race horses of the past the Derby of this year presents some features which did not appertain to its predecessors Last year it had 30000 added This year it has 50000 with the peculiarity that most of this liberal increase has been apportioned to the second third and fourth horses the probable result being that the big assemblage of spectators will witness strenuous battles for the 10000 second money 5000 third money and even the 2000 which will fall to the fourth horse The reward for finishing sec ¬ ond or third will be greater than nine out of ten of the stake races of this country and Canada give their winners Another feature is that next to the Grand Prix de Paris the Derby has a good chance to take rank as the most valuable stake race of the world for threeyearolds although the Preakness Stakes might excel it in that particular for the reason that it costs 1000 to start in the Preakness while the starting fee for the Derby is but 250 However it does not matter much which of the two races rjBjturnsthegreate t Stijnto its winiier Both aremow turf prizes of the first order and both will have a worthy rival when the Belmont States takes on its added dignity of being a 50000 race There will be fat pick ¬ ings for the fast track twentysix times over slow track twelve times and over a heavy track eight times It was run at a but Star Hawk came close to it in George Smiths year It cannot correctly be thought that any Leonatus Hindoo or Aristides in their T estimated the best twoyearolds of last year to be of much better than average class With few exceptions the best of those twoyearolds are to measure strides in todays Derby Undoubtedly Tryster ran the best and fastest mile ever put to the credit of a twoyearold in this or any other country last fall when he won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes over the same track where todays star event is to be battled out And Grey Lag o oand and Behave Yourself ran so fast and gallantly in that same race that they are entitled to great respect today Leonardo IT was a grand twoyear old and in his drytrack race at Lexington he showed himself to be superbly speedy It is true that his prospects were sadly tarnished by his defeat in the Blue Grass Stakes but it is worth while to bear in mind that Omar Khayyam was the favorite for that race in his year and was as badly beaten Prudery showed conclusively their entire ability to combat the colts of their age successfully last year and Careful demonstrated at Havre de Grace that twoyearoldE if anything she is better than she was as a superior twoyearold E R Bradleys Black Servant was well thought of by his owner and trainer last year but did not race as well as Behave Yourself However the two races he won at Lexington recently brought him to public notice as a formidable antagonist for the best particularly over a muddy track The oddity of this revelation is that his immediate connections held that muddy going would prove inimical to his chances That delusion is dis j sipated now and nothing Gangway with ease He ran a good third to Tryster and Grey Lag in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at a mile in 1 38 25 There is no doubt about his ability to stay the route in good style styleGrey Grey Lag is Sam Hildreths reliance and the fact that the colt is at Louisville ready to run is proof sufficient that Hildreth deems him capable of achieving Derby honors He is a dangerous quantity His best race was when he finished a length behind Tryster in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes He won four of his thirteen races last year and was second in five more It was a public trial good enough to please the most exacting This good son of Ballot ran ten races last year of which he won three was second in two and third in two He can be relied upon to strive every yard of the route is fast and a fine weight carrier He came out to Latonia last sum ¬ mer and won the Cincinnati Trophy over a muddy track with Black Servant Coyne Firebrand Uncle Velo McGoodwin Monsoon and Billy Barton among the seventeen behind him himOver Over in England last week the Two Thousand Guineas had twenty six starters and the One Thousand Guineas for threeyearold fillies had twentyfour Many of the owners knew in fine style for the race Commander Ross is bringing a large party here in his private car to witness the running It is the first time that Ross has been here for a Derby having been called away
