OPENING DAY AT LATONIA Fine Attendance Attests the Pop ¬ ularity of the Big Meeting Erratic Sands of Pleasure Takes TakesInaugural Inaugural Handicap and Fair FairPhantom Phantom Clipsetta Stakes LATONIA Ky June 4 A belter opening could not have been asked for than that of this afternoon Cooling breezes tempered the suns rays and added to the big crowds enjoyment The attendance was in every respect up to the standard of the best opening crowds ever at the track The clubhouse contingent and those in the reserved sections were by far more numerous than ever before Even with the big crowd on hand there was a decided absence of crowding and the sensible installation of terraces gave opportunity for all to witness the racing com ¬ fortably fortablyThe The veteran Sands of Pleasure carrying the silks of J M fioode again demonstrated that though eight years old he is fully able to cope with younger racers for he beat his good opponents In the Inaugural Handicap at a mile and a six ¬ teenth in gallant style and fairly good time An ¬ other veteran Woodtrap winner of the Kentucky Handicap was the runner up having outstayed the threeyearold Rangoon by a head after a drive to take second place Best Pal favorite iind top weight in the race landed fourth The Ilrndley representatives defeat was spectacular and unexpected in view of the lead he had taken shortly after rounding into the stretch Only a small minority thought well of Sands of Pleasures chance ta lands tftwinun BTJortioiTvaf trnswrinthe race buffllbse who remembered his sparkling race when he covered a mils at Churchill Downs in 130 the fastest in this section gave him their support profiting handsomely handsomelyHe He did not seem dangerous until after racing threequarters of a mile when he began moving up with n rush and stubbornly fighting it out passed Best Pal in the stretch and resolutely with Htood the challenge made by Woodtrap The early running was dominated by High Command which raced into the lead with a rush attended by Best Pal and Rangoon Keogh on the latter made a mistake in guiding his mount into a pocket from which he did not get clear until reaching the Btrctch Best Pal passed High Command just be ¬ fore the stretch was reached and a moment later took what seemed a winning lead but in the strug ¬ gle with Sands of Pleasure he gave way steadily and near the end tired badly Woodtrap ran back to his Kentuck3 Handicap form and Rangoon might have beon the victor but for being in close quarters on the back stretch stretchMISS MISS JOYS SUPERIORITY APPARENT APPARENTIn In the Clipsetta Stakes which divided interest with the Inaugural Handicap came a repetition of the running of the Spring Trial Stakes at Louis ¬ ville in that the Montfort Jones pair Fair Phan ¬ tom and Miss Joy finished first and second Fair Phantom being in the van on sufference for Miss Joy again demonstrated her superiorly but was taken back to allow her stablemate to win Dream of Allah landed in third place and easily showed herself to be the best of the others This time it was her own fault that she was last soon after the start for she dwelt at the start and it was some lime before she settled into her stride Miss Joy on the other hand began in front and accompanied by her stablemate showed the way unil Keogh allowed Fair Phantom to take the lead Startle raced well and was prominent from the start Omnipotent was caught in a jam just before round ¬ ing into the stretch and afterwards was not in the hunt The race had a net value of ri7r to the winner and the Jones stable also took down an ad ¬ ditional 800 in the race for Miss Joys second secondThe The vicious actor Flags again caused a big loss to the talent when he wheeled at the start in tin threequarters handicap in which lie ruled favorite Despite his burden of 133 pounds Brook holt turned up as the winner here scoring easily ami showing decided improvement over his last essay Minute Man landed in second place and High Cost third Distinctions bad showing here was in part due to the faulty ride she was given givenThe The racing began with a victory for Marvin May which succeeded in outstaying Dodge for the purse Mellora pressing the pair closely Marvin May was an outsider outsiderThe The Edward B McLean representatives Leoclmres II and Saddle and Boots had a big call in the second race but Colored Boy proved an easy win ¬ ner Leochares II landing in second place The latter might have reversed the decision with the winner but for his tardiness in leaving the barrier barrierP P King a recent comer to these parts and trained by former jockey James Mooney proved eas ¬ ily best in the mile and a quarter for which Hono ¬ lulu Boy was held in the most esteem Butwell rushed him into the lead in the last quarter and was easing him up in the last seventy yards yardsThe The last race fell to Accelerate which racing In her best form got up in the last seventy yards to overhaul Dimples Avith Matinee Idol in third place
