GLADIATOR IN RARE FORM Runs Impressive Race in Winning Littleneck Handicap Double for Rothsteins Confeder ¬ acy lolly Ann Again Meets Defeat NEW YORK N Y June 7 Gladiator won an impressive race at Belmont Park today He is in rare form just now Perhaps New Yorkers have lint seen a sprinter of his quality since Rraohcn was at his best It was not the trace of todays performance or the weight Gladiator carried HO pounds in the Littleneck Highweight Handicap It was the way he used a great gift of speed the way he won and the way lie ran over Peter Piper no loiterer himself in the last eighth and to win by four lengths that impressed impressedThe The Littleneck Handicap was at threequarters of a mile on the straight course Of course the Superman colt was favorite backed by his own from evens to 15 to 20 Some horses run over the Belmont straightaway especially the newcomers to racing over it with as much sense of direction as a pretzel But not Gladiators kind of horses Off third Gladiator dallied with Peter Piper until they were at the big stands end Then he strode away from Peter and won as he chose hand ridden merely to keep him going Peter Piper was four lengths back and a long neck before Sea Mint which ran a fine race So did Messincs at Sea 3UntaK1o CourtKlip the western sprinter was not backed looked as if he was just on the edge of a hard journey and raced as he looked lookedGladiator Gladiator reminds one of the Big Train as Rose ben was nicknamed of the glorious past He strides with a smooth power and is a fast generous horse horseHe He may do great things upon call this year There is not a faster horse in training here or elsewhere elsewhereThe The Rothstein confederacy which owns Gladiator evidently designed a triple Its guns and ammuni ¬ tion were in the field Devastation was the first shell and a dud Its Gladiator and Gcorgie both high explosives knocked the lawn targets into splinters Botli wero icliable in action and were used with great linancial effect The Rotlistein guns arc usually well aimed and rarely miss They shot over Gladiator in the open but with Gcorgie waited for false estimates to be taken then got what was sought soughtGEOEGIE GEOEGIE NEVER APPROACHED APPROACHEDGcorgie Gcorgie the second equine shell was in the fifth rare the Amityville Selling Handicap Of course Rothstcins Star Shoot colt was favorite after seven of the toi entered had been scratched Among the absent were Royce Rolls and Thunder ¬ clap Georgie wasnt backed early His price was allowed to drift to 3 to 2 Then both Ballet Dancer II and Diomedcs best of the four left were backed Gcorgie odds were driven to C to 5 with but few large acceptances at the close of the market marketGeorgie Georgie took the track and was never approached Hummer rode him as well as he had ridden Gladia ¬ tor taking up three pounds overweight to do it Dioiucdes and Ballet Dancer II ran outclassed be ¬ hind the winner winnerPolly Polly Ann may be sold before long Nice filly physically she is an arrant jade and a sharp illus ¬ tration of the brittlcness of her sex and age Polly Ann was in the third race at a mile for threeyearold fillies with only Thimble Scotland Yet and Perfection opposing Naturally although distrusted in the light of her Ladies Handicap de ¬ lay she was a hot favorite Men whose business it is to profit by soft spots considered her a dell of delight and ease and backed her for thousands at 1 to 4 and 2 to 9 her closing quotation It was to them like backing a democratic nominee in Alabama Polly Ann wasnt left at the post She wasnt dilatory either but off in front and went about her racing task as gaily as a drunken sailor But about the eighth post where she was clear of the driving Thimble Turner must have suspected the leader Polly Ann began to shorten her stride Sande habitually a hard rider and a good one used his whip He seldom if ever does this When in does his horse is beaten That is a sensing riders heroic last effort Only once is it recalled in which Sandc won by using his whip That was when Sir Barton beat Gnome a nose at Saratoga last August in the Merchants and Citizens Handi ¬ cap Sure enough Sandes whip yesterday was the signal for Polly Anns downfall for she came ehop pily home half a length back of Thimble the de ¬ spised outsider at 15 to 1 It was an awful blow to turf wisdom wisdomPOOR POOR FIELD FOR BOUQUET STAKES STAKESThe The stake race on the card was the Bouquet for twoyearolds over the fiveeighths straight course and worth 3825 Only five came out for it a poor field The winter racing Mawrcoron from Fred Burlews stable was made an oddson favorite why goodness only knows Mr Butlers home ¬ bred Pebbles Tamira colt Blackstone away third was far the best in the race and won by a wide margin from the favorite he further away from Kirtle KirtleDespite Despite reports to the contrary the threeyear old leg whose name is a composite of tiie initials of his
