AN OFF DAY AT LATONIA Few Horses of Note in Contention for the Purses Bullion Victor in the Chief Race Raceof of the Day Trainer Spence SpenceSaddles Saddles Two Winners LATONIA Ky June 21 the routine variety with no pronounced features unless the threequarters sprint could be termed such because of its being the only dash devoid of the claiming clause and having a purse of 1800 It was garnered by J B Respess Bullon in some ¬ what easy fashion with Jack Hare Jr Just manag ¬ ing to outstay By Golly for second place It marked Bullions first appearance under colors since last summer and It likewise furnished the first success scored by Respess this season Bullion has always been rated as one of Respess mainstays as his five successive wins attest He was re ¬ strained in close pursuit of John S Keardon until the field rounded into the stretch where he passed into the lead without urging and won with ease Rapid Day was favored for the race but he began badly and jockey Garner evidently believing his chances hopeless did not persevere with him and eased him up completely in the stretch stretchThe The roguish Sam McMeekin which has cost the public in all parts of the country tons of money by liis bad post behavior and has been barred on nearly all tracks because of it made his reappearance this afternoon under colors his new trainer Will Perkins having made u strong plea and representa ¬ tion to the stewards that he liad cured him of his evil ways Sout J roved for Sam McMeekin acted docilely to what he usually does and though delay Ing the start some he was off with the leaders He indulged them to the last quarter where he took command and though tiring in the last sixteenth had enough lead to hold Poilu safe for the purse Cantilever was probably the best in the race but he stumbled and blundered badly at the half mile ground and then came with a rush to land in third place placeLight Light showers accompanied by a cooling breeze tempered the intensely hot weather that had pre ¬ vailed up to the running of the fifth race In spite of the heat the attendance again was of a surprisingly generous number An absence of the better grade of horses did not militate greatly against the racing for the evenly matched fields furnished closely run contests marked by driving finishes finishesG G M HENDEIES FIRST SUCCESS SUCCESSGeorge George 31 Hendries silks were victorious for the first time this season in Kentucky when he landed the opener but he was u handful for his diminutive rider Josiah His margin was only a head over Colonel Lit with Dolph close to the pair pairStonewall Stonewall was uncovered in the second race and proved the good thing he was meant to be tor he won out easily after u sharp drive with The Colonels Lady and Ethel Vale The latter was grouped in the field but well regarded regardedMabel Mabel G upset calculations when she showed im ¬ proved form over several preceding races and won all the way in the third race GroundSwell just managing to land in front of Clintonville ClintonvilleJ J C Milam added another purse to the many he has taken down this spring when his Wayward Lady proved much the best in the sixth race She showed extreme speed but failed to take the turn into the stretch properly and lost ground She recovered it fast in the stretch and easily regained the lead she had lost momentarily and won easily from Mom and Birdie G GHigh High Gears victory in the closing race enabled trainerowner Kay Spence to saddle his second winner of the afternoon having previously sent Stonewall to the post Like the latter High Gear was favorite and the pair comprised half of the successful choices to score during the afternoon afternoonThe The Kentucky State Racing Commission members will meet Friday at Latonia to allot dates for fall racing on the Kentucky tracks Such other Mcing niitters as may come before the body will be passed on at the same time It is certain that the rule that a race of a mile and a quarter distance must be provided daily will be rescinded It will be left optional with the secretary to card these long races There has been a scarcity of long ¬ distance timber in these parts and usually the mile iuid a quarter dashes have failed to fill or had a limited number of starters startersIndications Indications at present point to a splendid field of threeyearold fillies starting in the Latonia Oaks which will have its decision at the same time that the valuable Cincinnati Trophy will be run P A Clarks Nancy Lee winner of the Kentucky Oaks will ngain do battle with Harry Payne Whitneys Prudery according to reports from the East that both fillies will be shipped here They will meet a worthy contender in E R rBadleys Bit of White and the race is bound to determine the queen of the threeyearolds
