DERBY CANDIDATES WORK Morvich Gallops at Churchill Downs By Gosh Runs Fast Mile and a Quartsr LOUISVILLE Ky May 9 Before a large crowd of racing enthusiasts Morvich the favorite for the Kentucky Derby was worked fiveeighths of a mile at Churchill Downs today and while he did not appear to be more than cantering he ran the eighth in llB the threeeighths in 36 the half in 48 and was pulled up fiveeighths in 101 Trainer Fred Burlew announced that the gal ¬ lop had been satisfactory and he would be given more tomorrow tomorrowMeanwhile Meanwhile My Play the Lexington Stable reliance with jockey Cliff Robinson up got around the course rather pertly himself and when he had finished his gallop Robinson was more than satisfied My Play with his head up galloped the mile in 1 42 and well eased up finished the full Derby route mile and a quarter in 209 209Deadlock Deadlock also showed signs of real life in morning jogs along with dozens of other horses which are to entertain visitors at the Downs for nineteen days beginning Sat ¬ urday urdayBusy Busy American one of E R Bradleys nominations was on the track for a canter but was said to have bucked shins His trainer would not say whether the colts condition would prevent his starting in the Derby DerbyLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky May 9 By Gosh one of the E R Bradley Kentucky Derby candi ¬ dates turned In the best workout of any of the western eligibles for the 50000 added stake when he ran one and a quarter miles In 2OC this morning He accomplished his trial in an easy manner and could have gone faster had jockey E Barnes his rider elected Bit of Green one of his stable mates joined in with him in the last half mile and this seemed to spur him on Be ¬ ginning at the quarter post By Gosh worked the quarter in 24 half mile in 48 three quarters in 114 mile in 140 and mile and an eighth in 153 The colt pulled up in excellent condition and cooled out quickly quicklyAccompanied Accompanied the first mile by Autocrat Startle worked a mile and a quarter in 210 Her work was only an airing as she was under restraint at all times and was fighting for her head The first quarter of this work was covered in 25 the half mile in 49 threequarters in 114 mile in 141 and mile and an eighth in 15G She was allowed to run freely for only a half mile and at the end of the mile when her companion dropped back sho was taken under restraint again againAt At a conference late this afternoon be ¬ tween Owner Montfort Jones and trainer Kay Spence it was decided to send Miss Joy to Pimlico to start in the Preakness Stakes She will be shipped Wednesday morning in charge of Butch Covington and will be looked after while at Pimlico by John E Madden who will supervise her saddling It has not been determined fully whether Gar ¬ ner or E Pool will have the mount Second call is held on both riders by Montfort Jones If Garner goes to Pimlico to ride Miss Joy Pool will ride Surf Rider in the Kentucky Derby If the latter goes to Maryland then Garner will be astride Surf Rider
