Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January I 1903 Word has been received in this country that Tony Hamilton who has been riding in Rus ¬ sia is suffering from consumption and has gone to Florence Italy James McConnick who trains Louis V Bells great colt Hermis laughs at the idea of the western crack McChesney taking the measure of the pride of his stable But for all that he holds the westener in respect The Euccesful trainer J C Milam arrived from California to take up the big string he will campaign in 1903 His stable this year will be composed of fully twenty horses head ¬ ed by Owenton which has been turned out since last summer but bids fair to stand train ¬ ing and is entered in all the big eastern and western handicaps The noted Commando now in his first year of stud senice at the famous Keene breeding establishment at Castleton when last weighed tipped the beam at 1360 pounds and stands on record as one of the largest stallions now in America He towers far above the mighty Kingston in height and weight and even Ben Brush and Voter look small in comparison Commando and his near relative Disguise H are drawing cards to visitors who inspect Castleton The small string of race horses left by the late trainer James Murphy will be trained by his nephew and namesake Jamas Murphy Houlihan in the interest of the dead turf ¬ mans brother and sister There are five head mostly twoyearolds and it is intended to train them at Latonia the coming season The heirs Mrs Houlihan of Urbana 0 and Pat ¬ rick Murphy of Memphis believe there is good material in the youngsters and they wish to try them for future turf honors After the last race last Monday at Ingleside the jockeys riding there presented starter Dick Dwyer with a magnificent diamond pin Bull man who has a very high regard for Mr Dwyer was the jockey instrumental in ar ¬ ranging for the present Bullman who is continually in hot water with starters all over the country manages to get along with Mr Dwyer without friction As a matter of fact Dwyer imposes fewer fines and fewer suspen ¬ sions than any other starter He therefore is extremely popular with the riding talent both East and West Full of years and honors one of the greatest horses the American turf has ever known died today at Tuxedo Park This was the famous horse of two hemispheres Parole He was wasbrown brown by Leamington Maiden by Lex ¬ ington was foaled in 1873 and as horses ages are counted was thirty years old when he died He won the July Stakes and August Stakes at Monmouth Park in 1875 At Sara ¬ toga he won the Saratoga and Kentucky Stakes in the same year He was a sprinter of amazing speed and a cup horse and stayer as welL Parole was raced with great success in this country until 1878 in the fall of which year he was taken to England by his owner P Lorillard He made his first start there in the spring of 1879 in the Newmarket Handi ¬ cap and inflicted a stunning surprise on our British cousins by easily defeating Isonomy the best horse in England He also won the City and Suburban Handicaps and the Great Metropolitan Handicap at Epsom
