AU REVOIR IN CUBA Sundays Racing Brings to an End Oriental Park Meeting J Alfred Clark Captures Long LongDistance Distance Feature Cromwell CromwellWins Wins Final Race by Inches HAVANA Cuba March 25 The ninth an ¬ nual winter meeting of the GubarAmerican Jockey and Auto Club came to a glorious end today at Oriental Park with one of the larg ¬ est crowds ever seen at the beautiful Marl anao course in attendance attendanceFor For the farewell attraction of the 101 days meeting racing secretary Martin Nathanson offered the Oriental Cup at the unusual distance of two and onesixteenth miles Longdistance racing always meets with pub ¬ lic favor and this contest despite the medio ¬ cre field that contested was no exception exceptionSeven Seven horses faced starter Milton and they furnished an interesting contest with a spec ¬ tacular finish the winner turning up in J Alfred Clark second choice in the betting the favorite Jno R Roche finishing third while Yankee Boy separated the pair pairJno Jno R Roche went to the front immed ¬ iately and set the pace for the greater part of the race with J Alfred Cark and Yankee Boy in closest pursuit There was no change in positions until the final eighth was reached where both J Alfred Clark and Yankee Boy challenged and after the pace ¬ maker gave way fought it out stride for stride It was a beautiful finish and a befit ¬ ting climax to a splendid contest but not until the last stride did J Alfred Cark fin ¬ ally get his head in front to earn the decis ¬ ion to the cheers of the big gathering who seemed particularly pleased over witnessing a race at such a long distnce distnceCHIEF CHIEF SPONSOR FAILS FAILSChief Chief Sponsor one of the heroes of the meeting met defeat in the sixth race at ono mile falling a victim to the speed and stam ¬ ina of The Roll Call which was the oddsoil choice and made good in decisive fashion fashionThe The honor of winning the last race of the meeting fell to the veteran Cromwell but only after a bitter struggle in which he out ¬ lasted War Idol by a head the latter having but a neck advantage over De Bonero BoneroSalvo Salvo outclassed the others in the first race and made a show of his opponents As ¬ suming an easy lead in the first eighth he kept increasing his advantage until he had a six lengths lead over Two Eyes The lat ¬ ter was runnerup throughout but tired at the finish Two Eyes had to be hard ridden to beat Humpy by a neck Polar Cub pulled up lame lameThe The second and third races resulted in spirited finishes the winners scoring by small margins in the final strides First Pul ¬ let won the second Close up from the start he raced into the lead on the far turn but tired near the end and had to be hard ridden to hold Kathleen K safe Only a head separated the two as they dashed past the winning line In the following race it was Edith K all the way but she like First Pul ¬ let tired in the last eighth and barely lasted to secure a neck decision over Johnny OCon nell The latter was gaining with every stride strideKETUJINS KETUJINS TO EV TO UK UKThomas Thomas Lynch the wellknown turf cor ¬ respondent who has been compiling the form charts at Oriental Park each year since rac ¬ ing was established in Cuba will leave for New York accompanied by Mrs Lynch on Monday morning Roy Dillard director of the parimutuel department here has ar ranged to leave on Wednesday for Hot Springs Ark ArkC C J Nelson who has charge of the instal lation of the parimutuel machines leaves on Wednesday for Huntington W Va VaGeneral General manager Frank J Bruen was un ¬ able to witness the closing days races on ac ¬ count of slight illness He was at the track for a short time during the forenoon to trans ¬ act some important business but was com ¬ pelled to return to his home at Marianao MarianaoJockey Jockey Lancet had a lucky escape from possible death or serious injury when he fell from Vhippoorwill while rounding the first turn during the running of the second race One of the oncoming horses stepped on the prostrate riders face inflicting an ugly look ¬ ing cut on the jaw but fortunately no bones were broken brokenJockey Jockey Corey was restored to good stand ¬ ing and had the mount on Polar Cub in the
