Here and There on the Turf TurfEastern Eastern Campaign Features Featuresto to Consider ConsiderSecretary Secretary McLennan s In ¬ ducements to Stayers Two Year Olds Somewhat Scarce at Bowie Joseph McLennan long since established an enviable reputation for success in putting on well devised races over considerable dis ¬ tances It is Joe McLennan that opens the season each year with the racing at Bowie and though number 1 position on any bill is not an enviable one he has never failed to make the racing what it should be in April AprilToo Too often racing secret ariss early in the turf season have offered the excuse for short distances in their racing programs that it is too early to ask the horses to race more than threequarters McLennan has the same horses racing a mile a mile and an eighth and a mile and a quarter And this is done with rare success because McLennan has constantly been working in the interest of races that mean something This year as an extra inducement to trainers to try for the longer distance races Mc ¬ Lennan has framed a set of allowances that should bring about better fields than ever before in such races These allowances are that in all claiming and purse races during the meeting at a distance of a mile or more horses that have never won over such a route are to have an allowance allowanceThese These allowances have no bearing on other allowances and are that threeyearolds will be allowed three pounds and fouryearolds and over will be allowed five pounds The maiden races are except cd cdThere There is much to commend in this track rule In the first place it is an incentive for trainers to prepare their horses to race at a worth while distance and the sliding scale gives the older horses help is an excellent feature The horse that is more than three years old without ever having won at a mile has less chance to learn to maintain his speed the additional distance than has the younger horse and it is right and proper that he should have the greater allowances allowancesAs As a spectacle the long race is always more popular than the sprint and is a race that re ¬ quires infinitely more training skill than the sprint These short dashes and which call for little in the thoroughbred and in the trainer are all too common Any fairly good trainer can fit a horse to race fiveeighths As a mat ¬ ter of fact he will fit himself but it is alto ¬ gether a different proposition to condition a horse to race a mile a mile and an eighth a mile and a quarter or a longer distance That is a task that makes a call on the trainer the horse and the jockey that rides and such are the races that put the real premium on the production of good horses Joseph McLennan has done his part nobly for years in working for these long races and his latest track rule permitting allowances to horses that had never before been successful over such distances is sure to have a most beneficial effect Though there are are no end of horses avail ¬ able for the Bowie meeting the number of twoyearolds is not as great as was expected For the opening day a goodly number were named and only three of them have ever been seen under colors Several of these two yearolds were educated at Benning and Mar ¬ shall CassSdy reported that while some of them were sadly in need of barrier education there were others that showed every evidence of having been well schooled One of these is Ramschackle the Whitney nominee for the opening race of the hew racing year in the East This one has attracted a deal of favor ¬ able comment by perfect barrier manners This will be a big advantage over some of the others that have not learned the barrier les ¬ son as well wellWhile While Bowie will be in full swing Monday the other Maryland tracks are busy now with alloping horses that will be seen in action at Havre de Grace and Pinilico Most of them arc already about ready for the colors Others are coming in daily from the South and from New York and Baltimore 1s filling up with the faithful who are eager for what is to be offered offeredAltogether Altogether every sign points to the beginning of a tremendously successful year of racing
