Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 18. 1905 Racing at Belmont Park, Churchil Downs, Kansas City, Fair Grounds and Union Park at St. Louis. It was announced today that A. B. Dade, who is at present occupied at the St. Louis Fair Grounds, will do the starting at the Memphis meeting, which is to cpen on June 17. Seemingly Fred Cook possesses the best two-year old in the West in the big brown youngster George C. Bennett. At least he is the best at Louisvilb and his running has made a big impression on experienced observers. He was bred by W. O. B. Macdonough in California and purchased at the Macdonough sale in Chicago last year for ,200. Tod Sloan denies the rumors that his connection with the Corrigan stable has been severed, that he intends to quit the saddle and that he intends shortly to go to France. He says he has been gall ping horses every mcrning and he expects to ride more frequently. He has accepted an invitation to ride at Union Park, St. Louis, Saturday and will Lave Kansas City tomorrow night. In some respects the inaugural Belmont Park meeting is disappointing. As "headquarters" this great track might naturally be expected to furnish racing of the highest order, but. even after making allowances for the-unfavorable weather of a bw days, Little above the ordinary routine racing of an ordinary track has as yet been witnessed over a course expected to set the pace for al other tracks of the country. Few of the recognized stars cf horsedom have started. In general the fields have been small and the horses starting of mediocre class. It is apparent that it is to Gravescnd and Sheepshead Bay that the race-going public will have to look for racing of the highest class and mast absorbing interest.
