THOROUGHBREDS IN FILM United States Government to Sponsor Motion Picture History and Development of Jlace Horse 1m 1mThis This Country to Be Depicted Feature FeatureRunning Running of Kentucky Derby WASHINGTON D C May 23 The Ameri ¬ can thoroughbred is to be immortalized in film Announcement was made here tljat arrangements had been completed after a series of conferences among representatives of the thoroughbred breeders and sportsmen the film industry and the government for the production of a government motion pic ¬ ture depicting the history of the thorough ¬ bred in this country countryThe The pictures will show the many uses for which the thoroughbred is now employed stressing his utilitarian value as well as his importance in providing sport and recreation for millions of people annually and illus ¬ trates his vital relation to the national defense defenseThe The thoroughbred is the backbone of the government breeding industry the 510 stal ¬ lions it now owns being this type of horse almost exclusively With these thorough ¬ breds most of which are former race horses the government has built up a breeding industry that is the largest in the world developing meanwhile better horses for the cavalry and creating a great lighthorse re ¬ serve for use in time of war The film will be a pictorial record of this tremendous enterprise enterpriseA A big feature of the picture will be the running of the Kentucky Derby which will show how the government relies on racing with its grueling tests of speed and stamina to furnish it with suitable stallions for its breeding work Arrangements were made with Col Matt Winn general manager of the Kentucky Jockey Club to make scenes of the Derby DerbyThe The Derby was selected as a feature of the picture because it has become an Amer ican institution being recognized as the greatest race if not the outstanding sport ¬ ing event of the year It may be decided however to include one of the big twoyear old races in the film such as the Saratoga Special the Belmont Futurity and the Pim lico Futurity to show the stages in the de ¬ velopment of the thoroughbred where his quality is put to the supreme test testParticipating Participating in the conference at which arrangements for the picture were completed were John O Williams horse husbandman of the Department of Agriculture E J Kelly chief of the motionpicture division of the same department Major C L Scott chief of the Remount Bureau of the War Department and Harry R Stringer repre ¬ senting the thoroughbred breeders and sportsmen sportsmenThe The picture will be produced by the Depart ¬ ment of Agriculture under the direction oC Kelly Williams and Major Scott who are charged with the administration of the gov ¬ ernments breeding activities will supervise the work
