NEW YORK STEEPLECHASES Interest Increasing Slowly but Steadily Each Year Pour Jumping Ilaces at Bclmont Tart ami amiFour Four nt Saratoga Fill Well WellLargest Largest Nominators NEW YORK N Y April 13 The eight Belmont Park and Saratoga steeplechase spe ¬ cials to be revived in the course of the New York season of racing the Metropolitan Jockey Club will Inaugurate at Jamaica April 23 a group of four at Belmont Park in May and June another series of four at Saratoga in July and August show no material gain as regards the number of nominations at ¬ tracted over the returns of last year The total for the Belmont Park group was 225 as against 220 The Saratoga quartet was the same 332 for each year yearThere There are thirtysix nominators this year in the Belmont Park events as against thirty last season The Saratoga annuals with fortythree nominators show a gain of five This would appear to indicate that the ap ¬ peal of steeplechasing is again increasing slowly to be sure but increasing nevertheless and is a hopeful augury for the future of the most spectacular phase of thoroughbred horse racing racingIn In the past fifteen or twenty years steeple chasing hasnt held its votaries Many of the veteran horsemen who made it good in the last decade of the last century dropped out one by one New people have come in from time to time some with considerable splurges only to chuck it for flat racing after a sea ¬ son or so Many expedients to keep it going big have been tried but without permanent success successSaratoga Saratoga Belmont Park and Aqueduct are the only courses that promote it in New York and Aqueducts interest is more or less per ¬ functory The Queens County Jockey Club directors prefer flat racing There are no courses at Jamaica or Yonkers none at Havre de Grace or Bowie in Maryland The Havre de Grace course wras dismantled sev ¬ eral years back None was ever built at Bowie Patrons of Maryland racing see steeplechasing in connection with first class flat racing only at Pimlico and Laurel and the Pimlico management has had to abandon Its once vaunted program of a chase a day In Canada it is seriously considered at Wood ¬ bine Park Toronto and Blue Bonnets Mon ¬ treal but not elsewhere Hence the signifi ¬ cance of the advent of these new people who appear to be the kind that will stick stickCOMPARATIVE COMPARATIVE TABLE TABLEHere Here is the way these eight chases filled April 1 the first four named being the Bel ¬ mont Park group the others Saratogas 1928 1929 1929Charles Charles L Appleton Memorial 51 56 56Corinthian Corinthian another 2500 affair is a gallop of two miles and a half halfThe The Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap gen ¬ erally a getawayday feature upstate is a gallop of two miles and a half There is 5000 in added money and winners of its re ¬ vivals regularly take dcwn 7500 to 9000 according to the number of starters they at ¬ tract The other three gallops of two miles boast an added money value of 2000 each eachThe The upstate chases outdrew the Belmont Park group because of the difficulty in ready Ing up horses for such severe tests in these parts in spring and early summer This has always been the case Possibly the Saratoga steeplechasing coming will be little better than the Belmont Park variety But Belmont Park will even things up in the fall when a Broadhollow a Brook and a 50000 Grand National will attract the seasoned stars of the upstate meeting along with some others Saratoga wont get Many persons every summer are importing made jumpers from France Ireland and England and these im ¬ portations dont appear to require much time for acclimatization Generally they go from the boats to Belmont Park to wait for the September meeting meetingJ J E TTIDENER LEADER LEADERJoseph Joseph E Stable Emanuel and one or two oth ¬ ers are liberal nominators in both groups of foreign horses that came overseas last winter Probably some of these outlanders will take part in the impending Pimlico chasing
