j | j j e o Hindoo, Derby Winner of 1881, Was One of Americas Best Horses g + Hindoo, winner of the Kentucky Derby ia 18f l, was one of Americas greatest race horses. In all this noble animal ran in thirty-five races, of which he won thirty, was second in three and third in two. As a two-year-old he won seven consecutive races, then finished second and third in his other two starts. His juvenile successes included the Colts and Fillies Stakes at Lexington, the Alexander and Tennessee Stakes at Iouis-ville. the Juvenile and Jockey Club Stakes at St. Louis, the Criterion at Chicago and the Tremont Stakes at Gravesend. Hindoo won eighteen out of twenty starts as a three-year-old. In addition to the Kentucky Derby, he was victorious in the Blue Ribbon Stakes at Lexington, Clark Stakes at Louisville, Tidal Stakes and Ccney Island Derby at Sheeps-hcad Bay. the Ocean, Lorillard, Champion Stakes and Jersey St. Leger at Monmouth. Park, the Travers, Sequel, United States Hotel and Kenntr Stakes at Saratoga. He ran seeoad in the Brighton Beach Purse and third in the September Handicap, both of which races were won by Crickmore. Hindoo won five out of six starts as a four-year-old. At Louisville, won the Cup, the Merchants and the Turf Stakes : at Sheeps- head Bay, won the Coney Island Stakes and Coney I.sland Cup. As a three and four-year-old, Hindoo defeated al of the best horses of his day, including Bend Or, Creosote, Getaway, Lelex, Alfambra, Bootjack, Thorn. Sir Hugh, Jack of Hearts, Crickmore, Saunterer, Monitor, Glidelia, Eole, Compensation, Green!.; id, Parole. Checkmate, Runnymeade, etc. Crickmore beat him when not at his best, but he beat Crickmore three times. Colonel S. D. Bruce, author of the American Stud Book, said : "Hindoo was the best race horse which has appeared in this country for more than a decade, and it is doubtful if any horse in England could have beaten him in the great classic events." In the stud Hindoo got Hanover, next to Lexington probably best of American sires.
