TORONTO Ont May 29 An upset marked the best race at Thorncliffe today when March Step racing for Miss L C White accounted for the fourth This brought together eight of the better class sprinting platers under claiming conditions C J Meisters Cantersine another lightly re ¬ garded one raced into second place and Toytime racing for S W Labrot after meeting sharp interference that sent her to her knees on the far turn recovered gamely to land third thirdIrenes Irenes Bob proved a bitter disappoint ¬ ment to his vast number of supporters who backed the gelding son of The Turk into an oddson choice March Step afforded trainer J L Roberts and jockey E Walters to rbund out a double for the afternoon having accounted for the opening race with Hernando HernandoMarch March Step was first out of the stalls but was soon supplanted by Cantersine Irenes Bob was also alert at the start but dropped back badly in the first few strides The Meister filly once showing the way opened up a good lead as the field sped down the back stretch and the ultimate win ¬ ner was just showing the way to Bran Muf ¬ fin while Irenes Bob moving along on the outside had raced into fourth place placeCantersine Cantersine increased her lead slightly midway on the turn and it was not until straightened out for the run to the finish that Watters called on the Light Brigade gelding for improved speed and Cantersine was holding a lead a furlong from the fin ¬ ish but March Step had been taken to the outside and began closing the gap that sepa ¬ rated him from the leading filly fillyWatson Watson had come to the inside with the favorite and for a brief period appeared to be going to reach the leaders when he sud ¬ denly dropped back again againIt It was not until inside the last sixteenth that March Step managed to draw up on even terms with Cantersine but once even with the pacemakers it was no trick to draw into a lead of a half length by the time the finish line was passed The duel of the leading pair had carried them three lengths before Toytime which finish his courageous effort in third place while Irenes Bob had tired so badly as to wind up near the rear rearMarch March Step in gaining his triumph estab ¬ lished a new track record for the three quarters distance when he sped over the distance in 111 clipping twofifths of a second off the old mark established by Lit ¬ tle GypLadies Gyp Ladies Day saw another large crowd on hand to witness the program arranged for their entertainment Summerlike weather conditions prevailed and racing was spirited enough to please the Rain had a comparatively easy time of it to account for major honors it was a thrilling battle for the lesser splits of the purse when Hayfire Centermarch and Boocap came to the end noses apart and in
