Here and There on the Turf i i iCancelling Cancelling Futurity No Surprise j Bade Park Steps Out NewHawthorne Officials Western Juveniles to Show Compelled to pay 12000 in state county and city taxes for each day of racing it holds the Maryland Jockey Club has decided to call off its 40000 Pimlico Futurity for the second year in succession The announce ¬ ment that the directors of the Baltimore track had taken this step did not come as much of a surprise to persons knowing the complete state of affairs existing at the Hilltop course But what is surprising is the continued operation of Pimlico in the face of the tremendous taxation The state of Maryland extracts 6000 from each of the major associations for each day of racing and in addition to paying this Pimlico must cough up 3000 daily to the city of Balti moreand a similar amount to the county of Baltimore It would serve both the city arid county right if Pimlico was to abandon the sport sportPimlicQs PimlicQs next to impossible setup does not end with the tremendous taxation however The Maryland Jockey Club does not own the property upon which is located the track but only rents it Belonging to an estate managed by a bank the Pimlico property is leased to the Maryland Jockey Club for a sum that was entirely within keeping with the prosperity enjoyed several years ago but much too great these past few seasons With so much overhead that cannot be reduced the Maryland Jockey Club must look elsewhere for curtailment of expenditures so that it can operate its meetings with an idea of meeting expenses So rather than make cuts all along the line It brings its program of expenses down to expected income by cancelling the 40000 Futurity FuturityAbandonment Abandonment of this race is quite a blow to horsemen and breeders because the event has been eagerly sought for many years Not only has it given some owner a chance to pick up fifty or sixty thousand dollars at a single scoop but it also has had worthwhile awards for breeders of the first second and third horses With the Pimlico Futurity taken off the calendar there is not much in ¬ ducement in Maryland during the fall for the better twoyearolds save the Eastern Shore Handicap Not even the latter con ¬ test is rich enough to keep the Belmont Futurity winner in training following the re ¬ newal of the Long Island special whereas the Pimlico Futurity frequently has kept the better juveniles under the saddle Top Flight and High Strung are winners of recent Belmont Futuritys to keep going until they accounted for the Pimlico Futurity as well iDade Park located down in western Kentucky on a peninsula formed by the Ken ¬ tucky River is to hold a twentysix day meeting starting August 4 the most ambi ¬ tious in the history of the course Profit ¬ able operation of the track during the past two years has given its promoters chief of Whom is James C Ellis automobile sales ¬ man the encouragement to expand Dade Park is not a pretentious plant but horse ¬ men like it and so do the sportminded resi ¬ dents of that center of the country the principal cities of which are Henderson Owensbdro and Evansville Ind Ellis has not found Dade Park too expensive to oper ¬ ate even though hardly a spring goes by but what it is covered by several feet of water caused by the Kentucky River going over its banks With neither Latonia nor Fairmount Park racing at the time Dade Park should not lack for material materialNo No announcement has been made regard ¬ ing plans for Hawthorne which has been under new management since last winter when Joseph A Murphy was deposed as gen ¬ eral manager but it is understood that C W Timmie Hay general manager of Wash ¬ ington Park owner of Scotland Farm in Kentucky where he raises many horses yearly is under consideration as the asso ¬ ciation steward to serve with C J Fitz Gerald the commission representative In the event that Charles McLennan does not leave a similar post at Detroit to be the Hawthorne racing secretary report has It that the young but nevertheless capable and experienced Francis Dunne will be tendered the position Jack Hodges chief assistant to William Hamilton may get the job as starter Hamilton will ba at Dade Park Continued on twentyeighth page
