TffO NEW TRACK RECORDS RECORDSCrofter Crofter and Rock Crest Lower Track Records at Long Branch r Crofr Crof Crofter ter a Big Surprise TORONTO Ont June 10 Coming back with a batter performance than he showed in the Canadian Breeders Handicap on Saturday Crofter sporting the silks of Hon D Raymond of Montreal was winner of the Gray Coach Handicap a gallop of one mile and seventy yards that featured the card of races at Long Branch today Drop ¬ ping eleven pounds from his previous race the homebred son of Cudgel the only one of that parentage engaged clipped a fifth of a second from the track mark for the distance and his achievement came as a sharp surprise when he ran the distance in 142 142Landing Landing in second place beaten by a length and onehalf came Jewell Brothers Friend Charley after he led the way for most of the journey Then followed Mrs J Badames persistent fouryearold Trey to lead home Projectile Unencumbered Final ¬ ist Ilchester Spey Crest and Acautaw completing one of the best fields of distance performers to be engaged this season seasonIn In the feature Crofter was entrusted to the veteran E Barnes and for the first part of the journey raced along in a posi ¬ tion back of the leaders while Friend Charley Trey and Projectile went out to show the way Barnes had some difficulty in getting the long striding son of Cudgel into full stride and he was unable to better his position during the first six furlongs Catching his opponents readily in the late stages Crofter drew abreast of Friend Charley midway on the home stretch went past soon after and in a steady drive landed safely over the line Trey after racing at the throat latch of Friend Charley lasted to finish third beaten almost three lengths for second place while Projectile held sway over Unencumbered and the others othersIdeal Ideal weather conditions brought a large gathering to the Lake Shore course and a fast track resulted in two new track records being established during the afternoon afternoonCrofters Crofters mark in the feature clipped a fifth of a second from the existing mark while Rock Crest reduced the seven furlong record by twofifths of a second
