Jockeys With Mounts In Todays Derby JOHNNY ADAMS Blue Swords Two times winner of the national riding cham ¬ pionship in 1937 and 1942 Adams is a development of the western halfmile cir ¬ cuit He hails from lola Kansas and was born in 1915 A rider whose services are much in demand Adams annually is one of the most active little men in the saddle He is a veteran of three previous Derbys Technician in 1939 Swain in 1941 and Sir War in 1942 RAYMOND AD AIR No Wrinkles Born at Payson Arizona in 1917 he began riding at Aqua Caliente in 1938 and had the thrill of winning with his first four mounts Rode several years on the West Coast and then drifted East and has been doing most of his riding on the New Eng ¬ land circuit TED ATKINSON Gold Shower Will be making his first appearance in a Derby today Twentyseven years old Atkinson was born in Toronto Has been among the more successful riders of the past several years and in 1942 ranked sixth in the na ¬ tional standings with 169 winners Also has been one of the most active members of his profession professionWENDELL WENDELL EADS Ocean Wave Only 20 years old Eads a native of Charleston 111 will be one of the youngest saddle smiths in the Derby Rode his first winner a few years ago at Oaklawn Park and has been with Calumet Farm for the last two years Will be accepting his first Derby mount today JOHN LONGDEN Count Fleet Was born in 1910 in Wakefield England and was brought to America as a child Has be n one of the countrys top reinsmen for a number of years and in 1938 topped the American jockey list Has ridden in three previous Derbys He was fourth with Melodist in 1937 fifth with Sirocco in 1940 and fourth last year with With Regards RegardsCONN CONN McCREARY Slide Rule Twentythree years old and a resident of St Louis McCreary is one of the shortest jockeys in the trade Was developed by Steve Judge and is one of the countrys most successful reinsmen in the country He has ridden in two previous Derbys He handled Our Boots in 1941 and First Fid ¬ dle last spring ALFRED ROBERTSON Amber Light Came to this country from Aberdeen Scot ¬ land and was developed into a jockey by his father Has been rated among the leaders of his profession for more than 10 years and is reputed to be one of the wealthiest members of his calling He has ridden four Derby contestants all of them for Milky Way Farm They were The Fighter in 1936 Reaping Reward in 1937 Mountain Ridge in 1938 and On Location in 1939 Reaping Reward was third the others unplaced CHARLES SWAIN Modest Lad A St Louis boy who has confined most of his riding activities to tracks of the middle west Was born in 1919 and has been in the saddle for the last five or six years He is a nephew of Frank Swain horseman and former jockey Will be riding in his first Derby FERRIL ZUFELT Bankrupt Is one of three brothers who became jockeys The other two Zufelt boys are Grant and Ralph Is 20 years old and has been riding about three years Was one of the leading riders in California before the present war Is the son of a horseman and has been around thoroughbreds most of his life This will be his first Derby experience experienceCORNEL1O CORNEL1O MO JENA Dove Pie Born 26 years ago in Cuba Mojena got his start in the saddle on the island Came to this country about eight years ago and has done most of his riding in this country ever since sinceMANNEL MANNEL N GONZALEZ Burnt Cork Another native of Cuba After getting his preliminary experience on the island he came to the United States where he has experienced better than ordinary success
