Jockeys at Detroit Agree To Discipline Each Other OtherAim Aim to Further Cooperate With Stewards to Keep Sport Clean CleanDETROIT DETROIT Mich May 24 Jockeys at the Fair Grounds are going to discipline each other and see to it that any boy guilty of repeated unfair riding tactics is recom ¬ mended at their own insistance for punish ¬ ment by the stewards It is not to be con ¬ strued as encroaching on the stewards jurisdiction but rather is an attempt to further cooperate in the cause of clean racing racingThis This plan as outlined here yesterday by John Swisher secretary of the Jockeys Community Fund and Guild followed a decision on the part of riders to keep their house in order The plan goes into im ¬ mediate effect It functions through an advisory board of three riders who will weigh evidence against any boy accused of foul riding and if found guilty recommend to the stewards that action be taken against the culprit In this respect it may be mentioned that the majority of such trials will result from knowledge on the part of riders to the exclusion of patrol judges or stewards of irregularities during a running of a race Naturally occasion ¬ ally riders get away with something during a contest which escapes patrol judges and stewards This plan is meant to guard against such happenings happeningsSwisher Swisher who has been working on this plan over a lengthy period of time is mak ¬ ing a countrywide tour endeavoring to have it at every track Prior to leaving last night for Chicago he expressed him ¬ self as greatly satisfied with the manner in which the management and officials of this track and the Michigan Racing Com ¬ mission received the plan planThe The advisory board comprises jockeys Melvin Calvert Porter Roberts and John Adams By the way should either one of the three themselves become involved in rough riding a replacement will be made madeEvidently Evidently the jockeys mean business For if the rider who was punished persists in rough riding and other actions detrimental to the sport and his profession the board may suspend him from the Guild a pun ¬ ishment which might greatly hinder his riding activities activitiesW W J Dowling Michigan Racing Com ¬ missioner enthusiastically endorsed the plan It is a great thing for the boys to discipline each other and I am gratified that they feel that way about it he said They will get all the cooperation possible from my office officeStewards Stewards at this meeting voiced the same sentiment Jack S Young presiding steward stated any action recommended by the jockey board would receive their con ¬ sideration We are glad to have the boys help us keep them riding clean he said
