I CONN McCREARY As rider of Pensive he is given the opportunity of becoming the seventh jockey in history to make a clean sweep of the Triple Crown races in any one season Pensive Meets Platter and Six Others in Renewal of Belmont Calumet Ace Choice to Take Last of Triple Crown Events Who Goes There Is Running Mate for Pilate Colt Seven Named for National Stallion StallionELMONT ELMONT L L N Y June 2 Bel ¬ mont Parks recordbreaking spring meet ¬ ing reaches its climax tomorrow when the Westchester Racing Association will pre ¬ sent the seventysixth edition of the 50 000 Belmont Stakes and the thirtysecond running of the 5000 National Stallion Stakes night threeyearold colts headed by Calumet Farms DerbyPreakness win ¬ ner Pensive have been entered overnight for the one and onehalf mile Belmont which is Americas counterpart of the Ep ¬ som Derby The principal opposition to the son of Hyperion Penicuik II is ex ¬ pected to come from the George D Wide ner duo of Platter and Who Goes There ThereIf If only this trio were to contest the Bel ¬ mont it would be a race to lure horse lovers from near and far The others named are William Zieglers Bounding Home Wheatley Stables Free Lance Crispin Oglebays Boy Knight Woodvale Farms Kaytee and Mrs Donald H Peters Bull Dandy All will carry scale weight 126 pounds poundsSince Since the Belmont was inaugurated at Jerome Park in 1867 when it was won by Ruthless from DeCourcey and Rivoli it has been won by the greatest horses on the American turf a great many of whom went on to achieve immortality in the haras Among the winners of earlier Bel monts whose names are still found in fash ¬ ionable pedigrees are Spendthrift Han ¬ over Hastings Commando Peter Pan Colin Sweep Luke McLuke Hourless Johren Man o War American Flag Cru ¬ sader Chance Shot Blue Larkspur and Gallant Fox More recently the classic has been the appendage of such as Peace Chance Omaha Granville Pasteurized Johnstown Bimelech Whirlaway Shut Out and last year Count Fleet FleetIn In the 1943 Belmont Count Fleet had merely to parade around the track to de ¬ feat Fairy Manhurst and Desoronto com ¬ pleting a quadruple crown of Derby Preakness Withers Belmont which had only been previously achieved by Sir Bar ¬ ton Such a feat is impossible this year Who Goes There having won the Withers but Pensive will be attempting to become the seventh winner of the Triple Crown The earlier wearers of the mythical bauble were Sir Barton Gallant Fox Omaha War Admiral Whirlaway and Count Fleet Pensive probably will be favored to achieve this goal tomorrow but Warren Wrights pride and Ben Jones problem are expected to meet the strongest sort of opposition from the Widener pair Pensives career careerContinued Continued on Page Three Pensive vs Platter In Belmont Stakes StakesDerbyPreakness DerbyPreakness Hero Seeks Final Leg on Triple Crown Seven in National Stallion StallionContinued Continued from Page One Oneas as a threeyearold is somewhat reminis cent of Whirlaways The moneywinning champion had an indifferent campaign in Florida was beaten in the Blue Grass Stakes by Our Boots then found his win ¬ ning stride to make a sweep of the east ¬ ern classics Pensive in his turn showed little in Florida and was beaten in the Chesapeake Stakes before going on to elec ¬ trify the Churchill Downs throng with his stretch run in the Derby and follow that up with a victory over Platter in the Preakness PreaknessPlatter Platter was beaten less than a length by Pensive in the Pimlico stake after get ¬ ting to the front at the eighth pole but it was only his second start of the year and he was facing a thoroughly seasoned colt Many observers who recall his improve ¬ ment with campaigning last fall fancy he will develop similarly this year in which case the wearer of the devils red will know hes been in a horse race raceWho Who Goes There is better than an ordi ¬ nary running mate for the Widener ace While he is probably in the Belmont pri ¬ marily as a pacemaker he has the speed to take the track from the start and is bred to have the stamina to carry that speed the full 12 furlongs should Platter encounter unforeseen diffculties The son of Challenger II After Dark won his sea ¬ sonal debut at Jamaica in dazzling fashion then was beaten a length though finishing sixth in a sprint here that was won by Boy Knight He came back to romp off with the Withers Mile in impressive fash ¬ ion beating all but the cream of the three j yearold crop Among those far back of Who Goes There in the Withers was Broad ¬ cloth who finished second to Pensive in the Derby DerbyBounding Bounding Home Strong Finisher FinisherBounding Bounding Home has finished strongly in all of his races this season suggesting that he will like the distance of tomorrows fixture but the son of Espino Marching Home may lack some of the class of his more prominent rivals However in a year in which there still exists some doubt of the actual class or lack of class of the threeyearold colts he might well cause a surprise surpriseFree Free Lance has won two races at Bel ¬ mont this spring showing stretchrunning ability in each case but beat little He is an improving colt and trainer Fitzsimmons believes he will eventually develop into a good one He has a golden opportunity tomorrow tomorrowKaytee Kaytee won his last start here the other day but beat nothing of any consequence the runnerup being Gallant Bull His presence in the entries like that of Bull Dandy is somewhat surprising The latter is an honest sprinter who seems to have been too often pitched over his head as appears to be again the case tomorrow tomorrowThe The familiar Conn McCreary will be aboard Pensive while Johnny Longden again has been assigned to Platter though he did not appear to advantage on that colt in the Preakness Eddie Arcaro will ride the frontrunning Who Goes There and G L Smith will be on the stretch running Bounding Home HomeThe The National Stallion has drawn seven capable juveniles including the Col C V Whitney entry of Jeep and BurgelArab The former won the Rosedale Stakes at Jamaica as well as an overnight race then was narrowly beaten by Flood Town in the Juvenile Stakes here The son of Mah moud was finishing fastest of all in that race and would have won in another jump He will have another chance to try and catch Flood Town in the fivefurlong run down the Widener chute tomorrow and will again try to concede five pounds 122 to 117 Jeeps stablemate BurgelArab is a son of Boojum Aporoma
