Lincoln Presents War Relief Funds FundsChecks Checks Totaling 704657 To American Red Cross and Servicemens Center Today TodaySTICKNEY STICKNEY 111 June 6 As an expres ¬ sion of obeisance to the courageous fight ¬ ing men of the Allies who today inaugu ¬ rated on the shores of France the most hazardous undertaking in the history of mankind there was no racing today in Illinois The program of the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club operating at the local Haw ¬ thorne course was called off by Col Matt J Winn before eight oclock this morning and cancellation of racing at the Collins ville track of the Fairmount Park Jockey Club was announced by D C Burnett a short time later laterIn In calling off their programs executives of the associations gave employees of the two tracks horsemen and turf fans full opportunity to attend church services and special ceremonies of reverence Corre ¬ spondingly many other tracks closed for the day dayWhen When announcing cancellation of the Lincoln Fields program Colonel Winn added that when racing is resumed tomor ¬ row Stuyvesant Peabody president of the association will present to the American Red Cross War Fund and the Chicago Servicemens Center checks amounting to 10465712 This represents the proceeds from the Memorial Day War Relief pro ¬ gram conducted by the Lincoln Fields Jockey Club ClubMayor Mayor Kelly and Kennedy to Accept AcceptThe The checks will be accepted by Mayor Edward J Kelly representing the Chicago Servicemens Center and M H Kennelly a Chicago head of the American Red Cross War Fund The donation to the latter will amount to 6977141 or twothirds of the total while the remaining third or 34 88571 goes to the Servicemens Center CenterD D J Conerty representing the Internal Revenue Bureau will witness the presenta ¬ tions tionsIn In taking cognizance of todays closing of tracks under their jurisdiction the Illi ¬ nois Racing Board issued the following statement statementThere There will be no horse racing in Illinois today The least we who are not privileged to be active in the invasion can do is to set aside all activity and devote the day to prayer for Gods blessing upon our gallant boys and girls engaged in this terrific un ¬ dertaking dertakingThe The board composed of Ednyfed H Wil ¬ liams chairman William E Fay and Frank FrankE E Mandel had recommended such action by the track associations in a statement released following a recent meeting of the turf solons
