HBPA in New York Opposes All Awards AwardsEastern Eastern Group Strongly Favors Action of Racing Associations AssociationsJAMAICA JAMAICA L L N Y April 30 Ap ¬ proximately 100 owners and trainers turned up at the Whitman Hotel in Ja ¬ maica last evening making the largest at ¬ tendance ever to gather at a meeting of the New York division of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association The session began with the annual elections but quickly turned to a consideration of the pressing problem of groom awards After prolonged discussion in which horse ¬ men gave expression to their views the representatives of the Exercise Boys and Grooms Association of America were called in and given an emphatic no to their demand that the owners and trainers guarantee continued payment of 10 awards to exercise boys and grooms han ¬ dling losers and 20 to those handling winners winnersA A motion introduced by John Swisher put the HBPA on record as opposed to all awards including those to trainers grooms exercise boys breeders and blacksmiths and supported the policy of the racing as ¬ sociations in discontinuing such awards This motion was passed virtually unani ¬ mously by a voice vote Phil Bieber then introduced a motion that would have the HBPA tell the grooms and exercise boys that while the HBPA disapproved of awards in principle it was a matter for individual employers to decide This mo ¬ tion was crushed with hardly a supporting vote voteClarence Clarence Buxton then made a motion to toContinued Continued on Page Three
