MRS F AMBROSE CLARK Owner of ofHidalgo Hidalgo Spring Maiden Steeplechase Steeplechasewinner winner Hidalgo Easily Best at Belmont In Spring Maiden Steeplechase Whips Lieut Well by Ten Lengths as Six Members of Field Fall During Running RunningBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L L N Y May 17 Eleven horses went to the post in the Belmont Spring Maiden Steeplechase today and five of them finished the two mile journey As Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Hidalgo the favorite was crossing the fin ¬ ish line 10 lengths before Bayard Sharps Lieut Well riderless horses were running all over the race track with pony boys in pursuit Montpeliers Virely finished three lengths back of the runnerup and 20 lengths before Clynmalyra Studs Quonset while Brookmeade Stables Big Three stag ¬ gered home after the winner had left the track trackHidalgo Hidalgo paid 660 and was ridden by Fred Kratz KratzA A throng of 23870 attended the races in muggy threatening weather They were treated to a few mild surprises although Mrs E G Hess Inahurry performed to expectations in the opening event for juveniles outgaming Lester Manor Stables Manor Lass to score by a nose while Dolly Zac was third before Dusty Ribbon who was a good thing and performed rather better than most paddock tips Margaret Brennens Peebles Habit was also well supported in the second race in which he had little trouble beating Galamilk with the pacemaking Diamond Baby a wilt ¬ ing third D Nosseks Gun Deck was some ¬ what neglected in the third race and paid 1140 This was a weirdly run affair with Bee Twenty Nine Cheesestrawand the fa ¬ vored Quaker running almost to the out ¬ side bushes most of the way and Gun Deck and Lloyds who finished second before Bee Twenty Nine saving many lengths at the stretch bend bendChancefield Chancefield was the first to fall going down at the water jump in front of the stands when Big Three was leading be ¬ fore Virelay and Bold Mate while Hidalgo was a fairly close fourth They all cleared the next two jumps without serious mis ¬ hap though Tetrol and Lieut Well were jumping clumsily clumsilyAt At the sixth fence Battle Cruiser and Kittiwhisk fell while Virelay took over the lead closely followed by Hidalgo Bold Mate and Lieut Well as Tetrol began to close ground groundCreamery Creamery fell at the ninth fence and Tetrol who was making a strong bid fell over him At the same moment Hidalgo drew away to an open leand and Lieut Well moved into second place before Vire ¬ lay The order did not change for the rest of the journey but Bold Mate came down at the final fence and rolled on jockey C Gibson fracturing his collarbone Gibson was the only rider injured in the shambles and miraculously none of the horses were seriously damaged
