HAWTHORNES HAWTHORNS REOPJENING REOPENING Hawthorne opened its gates for the first time since the spring of 1895 and the large crowd present seemed glad to get back to a race track which in many ways is one of the best in the west Particularly were the horsemen pleased John Huffman said Here is as good soil ts ever a racehorse set foot on the water is splendid the stabling of the best As for me I would like to race here until the snow flies W P Maxwell came up from St Louis to spend the day and superintend the arrangements for his starting machine machineCapt machine Capt Caput J H Rees was installed presiding judge his associate being Secretary Harrj Harry Kuhl Kohl W F Bruen Braun filled the position of starter There were fourteen bookmakers doing business in the big ring The day was a perfect one for racing Everything about the place was as clean as a whistle and newc new mers ers especially admired the paddock paddockThe paddock The first race being voted a wnlkover walkover for Lady Ellerslie Wellesley Licalzis Localism filly opened at 1 to 2 and went to the post at 11 to 20 She won as he pleased lying second to Dave Waldo Weald for keeighths eyesight Storm King was third to the last sixteenth where Pacemalerwho Pacemaker had been last up the back stretch got up and beat him for third money H Shields on Storm King fiddled for a running start but Bruen Braun said nay nay and when Storm King finally got up and put his hose against the barrier off went the trigger and the horses got away to a perfect start startHolland Holland fussed around the post and when he finally got ready the netting went up to a straggling start T Burns on Capsicum and J Reiff Riff on Doremus Dorms being left standing still at the post The race was a match between Boney Bony Boy and Ailyar Halyard the pair being always in front Holland was always third In a drive from the last eighth to the wire W Martin on Ailyar Halyard bore Rose on Boney Bony Boy close in on the rails and this had Reas Areas ReasThe Breathe The starter left Libertine and Dare II stand ¬ ing King at the post in the handicap but both horses ran over the course and finishing as close to the leader as when they
