GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The owners and trainers turning down Elizabeth M. last fall as not wanting her at any price have furnished considerable paddock gossip of late, since the fillys good win at Sheepshead. History repeats itself apparently in the case of June Gayle. son of the champion race horse of his day, Henry of Navarre. When sent to the New York market for public sale in the spring of 1899 the chestnut colt by Henry of Navarre— Lisric was taken with distemper and had to be "carted" away to a horse dispensary. He survived the attack, as forty-nine out of fifty usually do. but he did not thrive during the warm summer months, and when led into the sales ring in Sep-tember at what are now the Fasig-Tipton Companys paddocks at Sheepshead Bay he was a veritable "bag of bones" and no one wanted him, but finally a bid of 8100 was reached and at that sum he changed hands. This spring, out of four starts in the west, he ran second at four and one-half furlongs, being beaten after a drive : won the Harold Stakes on June 12 and the Covington Stakes on June 23. Spirit of the Times. A number of the horsemen who have been racing at Newport shipped their strings to Windsor Wednesday night for the meeting which begins there two weeks from Saturday. Bob Regan took Allie Belle, arlotta C. Statira. Irving Mayor and Syncopated Sandy. W. H. Laird went with the good sprinter Northumberland and four others. C. F. Baum-heckle took May Cherry, one of; the best two-year-old fillies which has raced at the Cincinnati tracks this season, and four other youngsters, and Hiram Pierce shipped OOMTINDBD ON SECOND PAGE. GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Continued from First Page. five, including Tadema. They will be followe d by others? within the next two weeks, and the indications are that nearly 200 of the horses will go from the Latonia and Newport tracks to race on the Canadian tracks. W. A. Hanrahan, the secretary of the Windsor track, is very popular with the horsemen that have raced there in other seasons, and they have confidence that all the promises made them will be fulfilled. Several of the bookmakers who have been in line at Latonia aud Newport will also go to Windsor.— Exchange.
