Los Angeles, Cal., January 18. — The sky was clear and tlie track fast drying out at Ascot Park today. The attendance was the largest in ten days. The close and exciting finish, l etween Lord Stan- hope and Zetluis in the third race, in which the fcKinier outstayed the latter, was productive of keen enthusiasnil and was by far the liest race of the day. Lord Stanhope has shown himself to lie one of tlie Inst three -year olds here and will lie difficult to beat in the future. La Gloria simply smothered her opponents In the fifth race. Mandarin. Which finished second, ran a good race and should give a good account of hlra-1 self from now on. Kent was set down for three days by starter Dwyer for breakiug up the start in the two-year-J old race. J. B. Dunn resumed his tilting today boosting La Gloria from ,300 to ,000, but the mare waa retained by the owner. "Big Bill" Knapp arrived today and will be seen in the saddle from now on. R. Davis got in yesterday from San Francisco and had his first mount In the sixth race. He is uuder contract to K. J. Ramsey.
