SUFFRAGE WINS CROTONA. JAMES R. KEENES FILLY TURNS THE TABLES ON ROSEBEN. Superman Sets a Track Record — Sane* us Scores in Steeplechase — Jubilee Triumphs Again — Harp Player Is Destroyed. New York. May 16. — Roseben was beaten at his own game, sprinting, iu the Croiona Handicap at Belmont Park today, the IMS going to Suffrage, the fa-i Voter filly from the barn of James R. Keeue, arnica just got ap in the last, furlong to heat Jack At kin. Roseben, with an impost of 140 pounds, was never a factor and Martin was at work on him rally in an effort to get him to the front. The Victory of Suffrage was a sonree of much satisfaction to Mr. Keene. who was present. Siu -e Suffrage started racing in the middle of last season she has ! een beaten but twice and each time by Ro-cben. Mr. Keene lias always entertained the hope ihat Suffrage would turn the tables on Rose- ■eneheaa preliminary gallop was not reassuring to his admirers, yet there was a world of stable roiitidcnc" in the big horse and he was a heavily backed choice. The Johuson-Sitllivan-Farrell CM mission came at the last minute and forced the price down to i. to r . He worked a half better than •" at Hravcsend a day or two ago. but showed no such speed May. He evidently is not the horse just now that he was last fall. Suffrage was rather lucky to win at that. Jack Atkin made the pace and was leading by a length at 1he upper end of the stand, but Finn was all over him when Suffrage challenged. Miller rode Suffrage and with riders reversed. Jack Atkiu might have won. Dreamer and First Premium were added starters and the Eonaar was heavily hacked, but swerved and was never a i-ontender. It seems Ihat Paul J. Rainey is destined to meet witli better hick at .steeplechasing than iu flat racing. In 1. S. Martin and Sauclu- he has two higb-cl.iss junipers. The former won in easy fashion yesterday and today Sauotus won just as impressively in a held which included the good New or leans jumper ! r. Keith. Sanctis fenced splendidly and always ahetwei the most apeeC In T. S. Mar-lin and Sanciiis Mr. Itaiuey ap| ears»to hold a pretly strong hand, while St. Kevin, which has not raced IhK season, is bettered lo be close to the beat of thi- pair. Jubilee confirmed his good form at P.ennings and Piinlico when he won the second race. In Wave Creat, the fNlds on favorite which finished third, he bent a colt that was looked upon as I he best shown this season. Jubilee; was at IB to 1 and the friends of Fred Lit tlcticlnL won handsomely on the race. I.ady Winifred, the Madden tilly, which finished secoud after leadimg all the way, is a trim looking, speedy youngster! and one that it will pay-to keep an eye on. W ave Crest ran poorly and could never get near the leaders. The Keene colors were- victorious in the closing race also, when Superman gave away bunches of weight and ran a smashinp good race, leading all the way to win in 1:44*. thus- establishing a. new track record for the distance —one mile and a sixteenth. His showing wasiMl enough to make hum favorite for the Withers Saturday, if he is started iu that rare. Three favorites won and Miller piloted three winners. The weather was gloomy all the afternoon ami a hard downpour of rain set in as the horses went to the post for the last race. It continued for more than an hour and the track will probably be muddy tomorrow. Harp Player, a sarter in the steeplechase, fell and bioke her leg. She had to be destroyed. Sine was a full sister to Herculoid. one of the best jumpers shown last year, and was valued at .*s.0imj by her owner. Colonel Robert Neville. The New Kochclie Handicap is the star feature of Friday allornoons ".ood program, and wish such rivers as Saiacinesca, Prince Hamburg. Kings Daughter: King James. Tiieiinidor. . W. Burt: Kings Plate, Kale Carney. Helen Green; Utile of Peipiesi. J. C. Core, Grapple; Tony Ronero, Savable. Master of rati: Vervane. Grliualtli. and Pins and Needles, aaaang the entries the racing should be 111 to the high standard of the course.
