of the twenty four eligibles to the Kentucky Derby which is to IM run at Churchill Downs Louisville May 5 They are Milford E T Shipp Al Muller Pink Cap Dunvegan Bill Heron R C Rann and Simon Weil The firstnamed four are in the stable of W II Fizer Pink Cap being the property of J Hal Woodford Dunvegan and Bill Heron are in W J Youngs string The former is the property of J N Camden Jr president of the Kentucky Asso ¬ ciation and proprietor of Hartland Stud and the latter belongs to Barney Dreyfus the Pittsburg baseball magnate R C Rann is owned by R L Baker and J C Milam and the latter as is well known is training him Simon Weil is in the stable of Walter Grater and is owned by John Welch Co of Spring Station the company being Captain Wilder the Louisville Nashville Railroad con ¬ ductor who has a farm near Spring Station on which lie keeps a few thoroughbred mares maresMilford Milford is most in the eye of the New Orleans contingent and owner Fizer is confident that the son of Falsetto has better than an outside chance to pluck the prize as did Pink Star which was trained by him last year Nearly every one who was at New Orleans and saw the three poor races run by R C Rann seems to have dropped the Englishbred horse out of calculation Trainer Milam makes no secret of the fact that the horse has thus far been a disappointment to him but he has hopes that ha will improve as the season advances The chief fault with R C Rann is inability to stay He did not lengthen out to any apparent extent through the winter and his growth seems to have been all In height He stands right at 100 hands Jim Baker a brother of the ownor of R C Rann who has been at New Orleans all winter with his string believes Milford will win the Derby and has wagered a suit of clothes that Milford would beat the Long entry Sir Cleges and Balbus now in training at Louisville arid almost certain to go to the post favorite Dr Mathcws In tho string of EdAlvey Is regarded as having a good chance and there Is some talk about Synchronized which belongs to D W Armstrong the Louisville detective Dunvegan and Bill Heron look good but they have not been here long enough to afford the workwatchers a line on their present qualities Reports as to their work at Memphis however arc good Grater has not Lad much of a chance because of the miserably wet weather and muddy track to prepare Simon Well but If he Is anywhere near a race of a mile and a quarter on May 5 he will go to the post
