STAMINAS GAZELLE STAKES WHITNEYS TILLY GIVES OPPONENTS MUCH WEIGHT AND AN EASY BEATING Don Enrique Wins the Patchoguc Stakes for tli tliPatchoffuo Patchoffuo Stable Rosimiro Wins from Kin Cobalt and Bouquet New York June 4 A card that gave promise of KOIIUJ excellent racing drew a crowd of fully 12000 IXTSOIIS to GruvesiMid l ut the day did not turn out to l o one of profit to the public as outsiders in the most cases without support were the winners The single exception1 was in the Gazelle Stakes the lays feature which was won by Stamina at odds un unGladys Gladys Louise from the li O Stable started the trouble for the form players by beating the lieavily backed choice Nasturtia for the opening race Dugan was again put up on Nasturtia in preference to T Koemer who had ridden the filly and who is supposed to be connected with the stable f W F Mathews wlio owns Nasturtia Fred Bur Jow then put Kocrner on Gladys Louise and the lad had the pleasure of beating out the owner who had turned him down for a more fashionable rider He was assisted materially by Dugans slovenly ride on the favorite He seemed to think he could win when lie so desired and held Gladys Louise too cheaply cheaplyM M Henderson made a bad mess of matters in the steeplechase The race was for maiden jumpers and nine ran Malacca ridden by Henderson was heavily backed by the smart set of the crosscountry contingent as he had schooled in a manner to mark him a rare good jumping prospect Malacca was well up when passing the stand for the second time but when turning into the backstretch Henderson suddenly pulled him up to a walk It was then seen that the saddle had slipped but not sulliclently to have caused a rider possessed of the least hit of courage to quit the race It looked like a piece ofruik cowardice on Hendersons parti and those who tracked the horse with such confidence were very inucU chagrined at the outcome Bannell ran out when in the lead and after Stcllaland had led lo the stretch Xoblesse Oblige came along and won from Mark Gumberts after a spirited drive driveIt It was lilting that Don Enrique carrying the volors of the Patchogue Stable should win the Iatchogue Stakes Hut few of those present took the hunch and profited lecordingly by the 15 to 1 laid against Don iKnrique Jacobite waslookcd upon as a real1 good thing for the race and was imcked with great confidence Parkview James B Brady and Dreamer silto had some support hut Don En ¬ rique although he had performed creditably a few days sigo went from 10 to 1 to 13 to 1 The start contributed somewhat to the defeat of Jacobite IH he broke slowly The race was between Park ¬ view and Don Enrique and the latter just got up in a hard drive to win1 by a head Jacobite never Iiml clear sailing until the Julia Powel and Bouquet were out for the first time this season They were fillies of good class last year but lack of support indicated that they were hardly up to bard contest Julia Powel which has developed Into n finelooking mare was high but showed a good turn of early speed and another race or two should flt her Bouquet ran a game race beating Cohort for third place In a drive driveLuck Luck favored the longshot players In the closing race Had Sundance run straight she must have won But she began bearing out im the turn and let the contenders through next to the rail Occidental and Yankee Daughter then fought It out in a finish so close that it was only guesswork which had won until the numbers went up Lliypad the favorite evidently will not do She got the lead and the rail when Sundance first ran out but quit badly W badlyW F Mathews will ship hl hordes to Montreal tomorrow Jockeys C Koerner and T Kocruer will go with the stable stableII II P Whitney has purchased from G It
