INDIAN STARTING GATE TROUBLES TROUBLESThere There is not and never can be such a thing as perfection in starting for the simple reason that horses differ and jockeys differ but we are very strongly of the opinion that the large proportion of bad starts on English courses are due to causes quite beyond and outside the control of the starter The difficulty arising from variety of equine tem ¬ perament will always remain and in lesfe degree be ¬ cause pressure can be brought to bear for correc ¬ tion from variety of human temperament So long as jockeyship lasts so long will the starter have to deal with the obedient the overeager the reck ¬ less and the cunning he can never hope to grind down their bones to a pale unanimity but as matters now stand he largely bears the blame which is rightly due to the fashion of iidlng which con ¬ verts what might be a fairly orderly field into a chaos of boys helpless to control their mounts as crows to control windtossed boughs There lies the evil that cries for remedy The Asian Cal ¬ cutta
