• FIVE FAVORITES WIN AT PIMLIC0. Baltimore. Mil.. April M. — Horses that are partial to heavy going have certainly had their innings at Binilico so far this spring. The track was again deep ami holding this afternoon and scratches were numerous. The fields in a majority of instances were reduced by half by withdrawal-. Init those that remained furnished good contests. The public is BC-giniiing to get a line 011 mini form and today*! results showed five of the seven favorites first at the liuisli. The winners iu several of the races were forced to stand hard drives to retain the lead, the finish in the fifth race Ix-ing especially close when Mice, the extreme outsider, managed to beat the •xlds-on favorite. Lochiel. by a short head. The latter was much the best and with a better rider than Steiiihardt in the saddle would surely have won. Steinliardt is a diminutive chap, much too light to help a horse iu track conditions such as pp-vailed this afti-rinxiii. When he drew his whip in the stretch. Lix-hiel swerved to the inside and the ground that he lost eaal him the race. Ti c steeplechase field was a quagmire and it was quite wonderful thai six of the eight -tarters finished the course without mishap. The two-year-old. Fruitful, owned by Burttsehell and Louis, was stricken with an attack af pneumonia yesterday and Ml not expected to survive. Edward Beters has taken up the Bainev. horses, which include the fast sprinter. De Munil. and the gixxi Jaaaarra Saactaa and T. s. Martin. Theixlore Coles, the well-known Virginian, was called to his home at Charlottesville. Va.. to attend the funeral of his mother. lackey Decrrtek has bcaa engaged to ride for apt. LB. B. Oaaaatl for the aeaeaa. Word was received from Toronto that F. A. Hal-ligher. formerly an assistant starter for A. B. Dade. is dying in a hospital in that eitv from the cfficta of tulM-rculosis.
